The state of trance in Melbourne.....

I think most ppl on this forum still enjoy trance in some shape or form even tho alot of us enjoy different genres now to (*looks at soups* :p ) but the state of the scene in melbourne right now is pretty critical.
As alot of you know Altitude who have long been a big supporter of trance have decided to move away from it and go strictly house which to their defence they had do to given the numbers that have been at trance nights and the numbers out and about for house.
Venues simply dont want it and the broader scene refuses to support it.
Today my girlfriend (vitamin v) started getting fliers out to stores for obsession and to my shock she was told by a few "if it's trance we dont want them!".
We now have a real problem.
Melbourne now has no regular trance night and it will be a while before we could look at being monthly with obsession.
Melbourne is fortunate enough to have alot of really passionate ppl who work hard to further the scene here but im worried we are just not doing enough or we are not doing it right.
There will always be new nights popping up and pre-existing nights exploring new venues but these are quick fixes that will eventually go down the same path as the nights they have superseded imho.
We need to start looking at why nights aren't working and why punters (or ourselves)arent going to them.
I have introduced alot of ppl to trance (and edm in general)in the time i have been in the scene and am yet to find ppl who dont love it once they are shown it; its just getting them there to begin with.
The risk we now run is that before we know it there will be no trance club nights in Melbourne at all. Big events 2 or 3 times a year, a big name tour maybe once and that is about it.
Are you happy with this as a possible outcome? Are you happy to simply download sets of the net and go out twice a year or would you like to be able to go out and have a big night any week you want?
No doubt this thread will start some debate but maybe that is what we need because the trance scene in Melbourne is seriously on the ropes.
Hopefully this will not become a big argument because I really do believe we need to have a big discussion and get the opinions of everyone in the scene in order to make positive changes and get Melbourne back on track.
Espescially the opinions of those of here who are "jaded" because there is obviously something you used to like about the trance scene that you dont now and it would be great to find out what it is/was and why not now?
What do you think could help things?
What do you think is going wrong?
What do you want or go looking for in a night out?
How is it that a genre so big globally (in the edm scene i mean) is doing so poorly in a city as brilliant as Melbourne?
Your thoughts....:) |

i cant speak for all, but for me its basically the music and i guess to a lesser extent (but should not be discounted), the vibe. with the vibe thing its not a tangible that you can recreate so it does make it very difficult. i respect all the hard work and effort that goes to these events but simply for me, the music/scene doesnt strike a chord as it once did. so yeh try to spread the gospel to those are who willing to take trance on board cos like you said discovering trance was one of my cherished moments. but sadly now, i just simply dont see myself reigniting the passion that once was. :(

| Scott have you ever thought that maybe this is a worldwide issue, not just happening in melbourne. Some internationals have swayed and rarely play trance nowdays aswell. |

Yeah i know, i commented just after marco v and MIKE how rare it is to hear typical uplifitng anymore from the big guys overseas.
I myself haven't enjoyed much melodic stuff for ages, but they still play a style of trance to full clubs week in week out. :) |

| You know, i've only actually heard a trance song at a club once, and it was that adagio by tiesto. Is real trance fun? I want to experience it one day :( |

Then you have to think, is it the style they are playing that gets punters in the door, or is it their name  |

Thats a really good point jolz, but are they all really that much better musically then what we have locally or is it simply the novelty of the name do u think? :conf: |

Its not a novelty, its someone whom you have been following for years and they finally hit our shores. (in some cases it is a bit of a novelty, why does tiesto have so many fans)
Another example if someone plays a darren tate track out im like yea, but if it were darren playing his own track thats a major YEA moment :eyes: |

In June of 04 teh Bates asked a burning question - How can we improve trance in Melbourne?
Was there really any need for improvement? Considering the following comment from teh s0ups in Aug of 2004 in thread: whats the trance scene like in melbourne?

its a healthy scene
with main inflences leaning towards progressive house, and melodic trance with the typical sub cultures of hardhouse/hard trance and techno... |
Now, in Dec05 - teh bates is asking another big burning question!

Though that really ain't a question, he has a point.
conclusion: i really need to do some work. |
