I just discovered a very strange problem with levels clipping in Logic.

If you have Logic, create an instrument track and have it play a kick drum for instance. Adjust the level of the kick drum to peak around -1.0 dB. Everything seems to be fine, there's no visible clipping. Now let's try and remove some of the low end from that kick. Put a Fat EQ (or High Pass Filter) on that track and cut around 40Hz. What's going on? Why is it clipping all of the sudden? Shouldn't the overall level of the sound DECREASE since you're cutting frequencies?

Is this some strange bug or an audio phenomenon I'm not aware of? I did this test in Cubase and it does not exhibit this behavior.

Please share your thoughts.

well it could be that the frequency cut removes some phase cancelation problem.. or do you have a compressor on the kick?

I've noticed that some EQ plugins (ie Sound Forge's internal EQ) appear to have that same or similar problem, most likely caused by poor dynamics handling and/or programming.

Perhaps the EQ you're using has the same issue?

No, there's no compressor on the kick and I tried two different equalizers (Logic native and VST) - the clipping still occurs.

Anyone here uses Logic who can verify this issue?
