Smoke Free Chicago

Tuis
Amen. Columbus enacted its ban at the beginning of this year and it was great to not leave because my eyes were stinging and to reek of ash until I could get in the shower and bury the smoke-ridden clothes at the bottom of the hamper. The Tiesto afterparty in Detroit was a smoky hell despite the great music and great vibe.

I respect people's right to choose - if you want to gum up your own lungs with tar, by all means, go for it. But don't force everyone else to inhale your dirty air =p

It was kinda sad, kinda funny, when the ban was effected...the bar I frequent only had a small table with a coffee can outside for the smoker's - and they were there in the February chill and snow, puffing away...freakin addicts. By summer, though, they had an enclosed patio they could bring their drinks out on.

I do enjoy the smoking bans that have become so chic among America's larger cities, it's definitely nice to be out and not have to deal with a layer of smoke 3 inches thick...

That being said, I am a smoker when I'm out drinking/partying, so I'm sure it'll be a moderate annoyance to me, but if you asked me, I'd rather be annoyed by the inability to smoke than by being in a smoked out room all night... it's at least good for my health ;)

Oh, and random side note just because it seems at least a little appropriate to this thread, while I think smoking bans are good for large cities with well established entertainment districts, they can have serious negative economic implications for smaller and/or newly developing cities. My hometown of Appleton recently passed a smoking ban, and the only apparent result has been reports of a decrease in downtown business close to 45%, and people migrating out of city limits to go out to bars/clubs, all of this after the city spent close to $100 million rennovating/constructing a "new entertainment district" (including a massive fine arts center) to revive downtown business. Not saying a smoking ban wasn't the will of the people, or that it is the definitive cause of the downturn in downtown business (The evidence is only corollary, I'm sure not conclusive), but in this instance, it has obviously had some impact that people weren't expecting.

Oh well... IMO, hooray for smoking ban in Chicago...

Ok heres the thing. I didnt know what I thought about this when it first came up. I struggled with what position Id take on it because while I do not smoke, I still feel that its everyones right to make the decision to smoke, and we shouldnt be able to make them do anything. However, I dont think that this ordinance is preventing people from smoking. Instead, its upholding the rights of the people that really REALLY dont want to be around smoke. Its killing people that arent choosing to smoke, and these people shouldnt have to leave a restaurant because they cant breathe.

you know, you have excellent points.... but you know what tho, I am also thinking that it's good to do for ALL of us because, in the end... smoking cigarettes doesn't do anything for you... now it'd be different if it had positive values to it, but does it?? I think its nice of them to do it, to save more ppl's lives--maybe? i used to be a smoker myself but one day it just was clear to me :disbelief ... smoking is anything but good for you! so its actually SO stupid to do it? i mean, one does nto smoke a cigarette for the flavor, are you kidding me? arlight, my drunken ass has said enough....
