i don't know if i would say that is what trance developed into. we think the melodies today aren't as 'strong' perse because we have been listening to trance music (which musically speaking is ing boring) for a long period of time (and our brain goes ok been there heard this).
back in the day a lot of sounds were fresh and new and exciting simply because they hadn't ever been arranged that way etc etc (plus they were brand spanking new to our noob ears)
production wise there has been a definite change, but i think that if any single one of us grabbed air for life from audiogalaxy back in 2000 we would love it to pieces and everyone would have it in their signature.
the problem with dance music and perhaps the feeling of 'decline' is because there are a lot of limitations on how one can make a trance song and i think after a while we all kind of realize that.
not to say we get bored because its the few tunes that somehow either get away with the formula or manage to break out of the formula that make it worthwhile. |

The new prog tunes being played by Schulz and Armin have weak melodies. There's no energy to them. My favorite producer (Andre Absolut) falls into this catagory of creating deadline basslines but he also sprinkles some pretty lush melodies over top of his basslines. I love listening to this stuff when I want to chill out but I wish there were more tracks being produced with more energy in the melodies that could rock a dance floor. Maybe I have to look for different labels and producers. |
medway and john morgan - toobin comes to mind. scarily good. also digging baunders work. everything on fade records. here are some solid prog house tunes been digging lately:
the alley qats - talk to me goose
todd dutkevitch - the brazilian rainforest
infish - slipped my mind
deep mariano - random influences (orig/baunder)
mert medeni - on the way
michael lanning - sacred geometry, ancient eyes
chris micali - kinshasa
micah - acandavi (micali)
afk - dreamcache (formulate)
muzob - shen (yunus)
nukem - forward
alfa - sacrosanct
oxygen breathing apparatus - words with the shaman (opencloud)
can't go wrong with micali and yunus. |

I feel the same way as you about trance now days. They're some great sounding tracks being produced this day in age but the main reason they don't hit home with me is that they have NO emotion in them what so ever. Tracks like Sparkles (Transa Remix) and Tekara - Breathe In You (M&M Dub) just have so much emotion in ever element of the track. The breakdowns actually have emotion and the builds are long as but you just get caught up in how powerful the track is. Unlike the builds in the tracks today where you start yawing to the boring twinkly melody and praying for the track to come back in.
It's nice to see some trance jocks slowy switching away from that sound. Once all the top jocks on the dj list stop playing the formulaic trance and switch to other styles, all these producers are going to have to follow suit and start creating fresh sounding stuff.
Deep down I feel popularity and the internet(I guess the two go hand in hand) have killed upliftiing melodic trance. There are way too many un-original producers out there making loads of tunes and sending them to DJ's like Amrin, Schulz or any dj who has their own online radio show (which is just about every trance DJ) so they get a name for themselves.
I dunno, I guess I'm called an "elitist" by all the noobs on this board because I feel trance has gotten too popular and I hate listening to what's popular.

Thanks for the list of tunes Caleb. I just came across Damien Heck - Alicante (Baunder Remix) which is just owning me right now. Really like the arrangement of this remix.
Formulate's production skills have come a long way in such a short time. Forumlate - Abbreviated Funk is a top knotch tune with a wicked bassline.

and that's what trance has developed into. Dominant basslines where people can smash their fists in the air and jump up and down...(Prime example that just happens to be on right now that I wanna perfect example... Above and Beyond vs. Andy Moor - Air For Life).
It's those soft simple meodies that drive a track to make you wanna dance... not the bassline. Which is the main reason I didn't like Air For Life.
As Angelo would say. "Backstreet's Back" :wtf: |
I may be stoned right now but the majority of your post just isn't making any sense.......especially this example you've used

Too me there seems to be two sentences........
Anyways, the original mix of Air For Life is a pretty bad attempt of electro pounding trance. Andy Moor creats some solid electroish basslines but they just don't sound good pitch up and with a really hard pounding kick. IMO, his basslines sound better with softer melodies like Halycon and his remixes of Translantic, Superfly and My World. |

For me, my trance influences stem from PVD's 7-Ways and the stuff BT was producing back then. It's hard for me to explain but I've always felt a writing process, a story telling process was involved in tunes like Flaming June, For an Angel, Mercury and Solace, Spooky - Little Bullet (the greatest trance track of all time) and Xpander.
It slowly evolved into what Sasha and Digweed were playing and it led me to prog and wutnot. I abandoned trance after the sets from all the DJs were about the breakdowns and peaks found within a single track rather than a full diverse movement of melodies and music.
An Armin set that starts at 140bpm really doesn't have much room for growth or am I just crazy?
Listen to the Northern Expeditions CD1 and CD2. Listen to Northern Exposure West disc. These are the greatest trance mixed CDs ever put together.
I'm going to do that right now!
PS Anything that The Light have ever done has been gold. |
