Mix house and trance together? (pg. 2)
Sly_Guy
it's all about reading the crowd. Personally, I'd want to go from deep house to progressive then to trance if I had your record collection, but I wouldn't be too set into how I'm going to play. Like it was mentioned above, feel out what the crowd wants, and play to them to the best your record collection will allow, and the best of your ability.

Another thing, if you are playing for a non-EDM crowd [as I've done a couple times at my buddy's university pub], don't even bother breaking out the hard stuff. As much as I'd have loved to play some great tribal on those nights, I just know playing it will empty the floor, so instead I'll play remixes of tracks they already know. It may not be what I wat to hear, but it's a good compromise for what I have as a DJ, and what they want to hear.

Ok, so I'm scheduled to DJ for the first time on Tuesday 8th November using Traktor and my mp3 collection :toothless

I have a question;

I'm going to be playing House and Trance, but I'm not sure if I should keep them separate, i.e. play first half of night as house and play 2nd as trance or should I just mix the two into each other?

I really don't have much House to play. I have tunes by people like G&D, Danny Howells, Gareth Emery, Clokx, Jam & Spoon, Swarm, Hydroid, Max Graham and Niklas Harding but think that maybe they might sound better as 'breather' tracks between the trancers.

So my question is, what do you do/what do you think sounds better when you listen to live sets with house and trance in?

Any suggestions would be HUGELY appreciated...

Many thanks in advance!:)

Hey,
Well I'm notorious for switching from funky house to melodic trance and I find it's the proper knob manipulation that makes the difference. When mixing into house, bring in the trebal then mid then bass, when mixing into trance bring in the mass then mid then trebal. Just a little trick that usually sound decent if your crossfading and beatmatching is up to par.

Notorious may be the right word....

Ive pulled out some crazy randome mixes when im bored in my bedroom, but there are somethings i wont to.

like funky house to trance back to funky house...

in fact, id rather just leave out the funky house and trance all together:toothless

Hmmm, people dropping funky house in their trance sets...

Not sure how you make that sound good given the two totally different types of feeling the styles convey.

Funky House is usually down at around 127 BPM. Most trance is around 138ish. Now I'm not saying it's impossible especially with todays technology. But if you are in the middle of a night and you have got as far as playing trance, the last thing the dancefloor wants to hear is funky house. You will wipe out totally!
Try dropping 'Deepest Blue' after Randy Katana 'In Silence' and you will see what I mean.

Whilst it's possible, if you are doing it then I would guess that you may still not have a bit to learn when it comes to energy levels and music.

That said, there is nothing wrong with doing it at home to improve your skills.

Cheers
