whats the dissadvantage of the sim cards?

Burton,

I am sure there are similar corp. plans for all providers or preferred customer plans. The trick is to find a representative that will offer it to you. Some customer reps can be tricky. I would recommend howardforums for more rep. and plan info.

I am probably not the best person to answer the sim card question so everyone feel free to add in some comments.

Sim cards are good if you travel internationally alot. I like to buy prepaid sim cards when i reach my destinations and use my cell locally. Also gives u the advantage of changing cells as u just need to plug it in and all ur data is in the new phone. I think it all depends on how you want to use your cell. I use Rogers and Bell. I like Bell as they dont charge you SAF and 911. That saves you quite a bit in the long run.

yeah, sim cards are convenient if you tend to switch phones or companies often. like ice97 said, you can transfer most of your data like contacts, photos, tunes on your card. but you gotta make sure your phone is unlocked for that.

i think there are more and better selections for GSM phones out there. plus phones available in canada suck ass for the most part :D

rogers and fido are now together but fido has kept most of its plans i believe, plus they now have contract options. i like fido because i have the freedom of leaving them whenever, altho i've been with them for over a year and couldve saved some money on a contract.

that new samsung is alright looking, nice features tho. i would assume it'll be available for purchase within the next few months in asia and europe, we might have to wait a bit longer out here, but i might be wrong :p

Eventually the Fido and Rogers networks might be the same. Right now they are trying to keep them separate or at least pretend they are, probably for some wierd marketing reasons (like Fido uses a smaller network system and costs less so is targetted at students and non-business users). They wouldn't want too many of their Rogers customers switching to Fido to save money so they try to keep the Fido system relatively wimpy. Market differentiation.

The Rogers network covers more areas so sometimes if you go into certain spots like outside greater Vancouver or the big cities there will be no Fido coverage but there will be Rogers.

If you pay an extra $5 a month to Fido you can use both networks without a roaming charge, called "expanded networks". If you don't pay the $5 and you somehow connect to the Rogers network you will be hit with a roaming charge on your calls. On Fido you can call *#123# and it will tell you which network is available, if it says "Fido basic network" or similar, you are safe. Your phone might be able to warn you when it enters a Rogers network area and needs to switch, and you might be able to set it so it won't switch networks.
