| so what's the secret to getting a nice fat backspin with vinyl? |
|

there is no secret :)
but a wee tip;
if you hit the brake/stop on the tt then do it, it'll spin much faster and for longer. |

i guarantee u 90% of the backspins u hear most djs doing nowadays are with cdj-1000 or equivalent.
otherwise it depends on the weight of the vinyl and the tune being backspun. |

| I usually kill the low freqs or at least lower the level since backspins sound better without the a strong beat i my opinion. |

the secret to backspins is to not do them, because they sound stupid.

...especially if you do them every 10 minutes (*cough*Proteus*cough*) |

my tip would be to NOT hit the record too hard vertically cause there's quite a danger of the needle scipping which will rouin your backspin for sure!
just give it a good straight pull horizontally and don't hit the tonearm while doing so!
otherwise, timing is important to make it a nice effect. I used to end some transitions with a backspin and it does NOT sound stupid when done in a nice fashion |

count your beats
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 3 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 4 2 3 4 5 6 7 8|1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 3 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 4 2 3 4 5 6 7 8|
each # is a beat/kick
count to 8... 4 times twice
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 3 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 4 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 3 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 4 2 3 4 5 6 7 8|
on the last 7 (see below) most tracks will be at the end of the breakdown or buildup whatever(depends on your tracks, get to know when stuff happens)
pull your backspin on that last 7 and slap the crossfader on the 8 to kill and complete the mix
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 3 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 4 2 3 4 5 6 7 8|1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 3 2 3 4 5 6 7 8| 4 2 3 4 5 6 7 8|
kinda confusing but makes sense after time...
as said b4 its usually a good idea to do no more than 2 backspins in a set, anymore than 2 and it gets old and you look like a douche behind the decks |

| you can also pull it on the last 5 instead of 7 if you can make long enough ones. |

| You will get slightly different backspins depending on your TTs, slippmats and records. I just stay away from backspins. |

I say one is the max, unless its a really long set and then you could probably do 2 :D |
