And now for something completely different..

For my translator study I have a short essay to hand in regarding the role of The House of Lords in British politics. Now I'm obviously supposed to wade through books and newspaper articles and the like, but seeing as you people actually live with British politics, I figured I'd ask for your viewpoints and opinions, as it'll provide some more interesting viewpoints than your average bunch of textbook information.

So, anyone with views or something to say regarding the House of Lords in British politics, feel free to post and/or discuss in here.
Grrrrr
Im not sure if this will surprise you or not but i know very little about the house of lords. If a law gets passed in the house of commons it then needs to be passed in the house of lords. That is literally all i know about it.

I'd also hazzard a guess that most of the country is as ignorant as me

Although i hate to admit it, i have to agree with the closing comment from the above. I do try and keep up with most things in the world, but the royal family, houses of parliment and house of lords just doesnt appeal.

Any particular reason for that? And is this a common sentiment?

The whole role of the House of Lords is completely out of date. I think there was talk of revising the peer system not so long ago, not sure if that occured or not.
Ste
you will find a lot of english people either dont care about or even know much about the lords!

if im honest i dont even know what theyre for, i know theyre born into their positions rather than being elected.

house of lords = mainly rich people born into their positions of authority because daddy was in the job, and their daddy, and their daddy ... etc...

basically the House Of Lords has less power these days since the Labour Government brought in the bill allowing them to make acts of Parliment law without getting approval from the Lords.

Its just a place for the people to move upto if they have done well in the House of Commons. And each government fills it up with there own people, The Tories did it and Now Labour is doing the same, its like the whole of the Government system in this country, a joke

Since this essay is supposed to be short, I don't have to go into that much detail, but any info is appreciated nonetheless. What I'd like to know most is how people in Britain view it today, the pros and cons that are displayed through its work etc. Stuff that British citizens like you would know best, and that you wouldn't necessarily get to know by plowing through textbooks.

Oh yea, and my deadline is on Monday, so getting it before then would be nice :p

Thanks for all your other comments so far guys, appreciated. :)

As someone else said, since Labour brought in the rule which means laws dont NEED to be ratified by the House Of Lords, I really cant see the point in this institution. Effectively, all they can do is delay a new act/law, they dont have the power to block it any more.

Also, the House of Lords did until recently act as a permanent Tory stronghold... all or the vast majority of the Lords were staunch Tories descendant from the original landowners/ wealthy people of England, who first got the position, meaning that if a Labour government came to power (like in 1997), they always faced a tough task in passing any laws which would alter the status quo in this country (like introducing progressive taxation instead of re-gressive taxation, which penalises the poor and helps the rich - something the Tories favour!)

But like I said in my first paragraph, with the new laws it doesn't really matter what the political make-up of the House of Lords is like, because they dont have any meaningful power now, its all with the House of Commons, which is elected by we, the people :)

(I dont think I've made any factual errors there but if I have someone feel free to correct me ;) ;) )

PS: my own view on the House of Lords... there's no point in it now! Waste of space, it should be abolished!
