Upfront Music - How Important Is It?
There has been an influx of DJs out there who are too obessesed with playing upfront music, playing the freshest stuff thats out there without really taking into consideration whether the track is actually mint... Whether the crowd would actually rock to these fresh tracks.
Im all for hearing new music, in fact my ultimate night out would be to hear mint track after mint track that ive never heard of before. Unfortunately, that rarely happens... In fact Ive only experienced this at private parties.
Nonetheless the average crowd does not appreciate what I do. Therefore why do DJs continue to play upfront ty music...? thinking they are the barra c0z they were the first in Melbourne to drop the tune, when in reality all they have done is clear a rOOm?
If I was DJing seriously I would not be a sucessful DJ because I would be only playing music I like...I wouldnt take into consideration whether the muzzas below me were going off to Union Jack - Two Full Moons and Trout. That is why I dont play out, and that is why I produce instead.
So to reiterate, when you guys go out to club... Do you want to hear only the freshest music out there? A mix of music youve heard before and new music? Discuss

| what about an old track that you've never heard? i dont know if its appealing just hearing fresh tunes, what if they all suck, as you pointed out. what you would have to do is keep playing the music until people did like it. |

old? new? meh. as long as i like the tune. i dont understand why any DJ would play a song based on its "upfrontedness". play what you like, like what you play.

no point playing brand new if it sucks.. and whether it sucks or not is varied.
i think the best things to do is play what works. it may be old, it may be new, who cares.. if it works and it rocks and 90% is old and 10% is new, then excellent. If it works and it rocks and its 50/50, who cares.. the general public wont, and if it truely rocked then the strokers wont either.
so in my opinion, no there is no necessity to play upfront stuff unless you think its good, and being the first person to put some bootleg which has never been released and only available via p2p software on a cd because its brand spankers does not make you elite. |

Me too :D And I'll grant I'm hit and miss, but I've got records surfacing recently from 1 - 2 years ago that I didn't play when I got it cos it was getting pounded to death, and I'm there thinking to myself: "..Stoked! I'm finally getting milage out of these..." :) Then again, I come across the odd really fresh one that nearly knocks me off my seat!! I think that many dj's that play out (well most that I see at least) subscribe to this theory and that is why they play at the places I see them: Good variety on a common thread. |

| i thought all dj's these days were trying to be as upfront as possible. take soups for example, he has a weekly top 5. i barely have a monthly top 5 these days so i doubt theres 5 good tunes in a week he can really say are 'mint' as you put it. no offence soups just using you as an example. |

Fair point dave.
but not all of my top 5 tunes are brand new either, and these are 'my opinions'.
last top5 for example contained Cape Town - Pitstop and Mesh - Trancefixion.. both old tunes.. i mix it up with new stuff too, like peaktwinz - dreamer, which i was sent by the guys at Electric Sauna. And believe me, this fcukn tune will go Bananas!!!!! should be released sometime in sept. and september rain is a gem sent to me by Bobina.
but even then, my other top 5 tunes are hardly 'cd-r fresh'. |
