Upfront Music - How Important Is It?

eRRaTiK
Guess what vee is getting at is the pretenders who don't have a mind of their own and who rely on ASOT (or whatever) to decide what tracks to buy next instead of making their own mind up and selecting tunes that fit their own overall sound.

They assume "hey Armin says it's tune of the week therefore it must be good", even after first hearing think it's pretty standard. However they force themselves to listen to it a few more times and convince themselves that it's a pretty hot tune.

Definitely nothing wrong with a person liking a tune that somebody else likes, provided they came to that conclusion themselves.

IMO the average shmoe wants to hear a mix of

a) choons theyve heard before and like, ie classics and/or current-year hits
b) choons that are similar in style to those found in a, including new remixes, etc
c) new and different / progressing stuff.

I think that, especially for the more rhythmically/harmonically complex genres (the sort of stuff found in the boxes of dean, soups or jpl for example), the real 'rush' or emotional payoff of a track is not delivered on first listen. While some tracks (Perry O'Niel's Waveforce, lets say, or JLC's TWD remix of The Killers Mr Brightside) sound stunning the first time you hear them, many other truly brilliant tracks only bear real fruit on repeated listens. I'd think a decent DJ knows what tunes to play that balance repetition of the overplayed on one hand, and no one knows a single thing you've played for the past three hours you wanker on the other. That way, there's the right balance of familiar and new. Look at the sets of AVB or Ferry Corsten (in relation to the limited tune knowledge of the average i-work-at-a-bank punter) and you'll see what I mean: a kind of 'ooh i know this one' / 'this one sounds familiar' / 'ahh whats this, its wicked! / rinse-lather-repeat type thing. I think.

The trick, I supppose, is reading your crowd (and knowing your night from your promoters etc) and thus balancing all this in a way that avoids having folks on the dancefloor throw fruit and veg at you - as different crowds will have wildly different tune knowledge. I don't think my tune knowledge is all that bad, but it seems many melbournian DJs (none in particular not taking any shots no subtext these are not the droids youre looking for etc) play ten tracks no-one's heard and then one that everyone's sick of. I like Ben Evans and Marsh for the reason that they play tracks that I know, but don't hear very often. Good on ya, boys! :)

I reckon that building your entire set around the latest tracks from the labels-du-jour is a great way to impress other DJs (like that Anjunadeep vinyl Soupy? :D) but really risks alienating the 99% of the dancefloor that doesn't own decks and wouldn't know a Ferry Van Zabeiligweed if it hit them in the face.

Education is best done at recoveries and in cars, and not on the dance floor IMO. :)
