PINE LAKE, Ga. (AP) -- Police officers surrounded a post office Thursday after a man fatally shot a police officer out front and ran inside. A witness said the gunman was holding the officer hostage when he shot him point-blank.
The gunman was alone in the building as all four postal employees had managed to escape through the back at the time of the shooting, said Paul Krenn, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
The post office was open at the time of the incident at around 5 p.m. Krenn didn’t know if there were any customers inside at the time
.
The slain officer worked for the Pine Lake Police Department, DeKalb County Police Chief Louis Graham said. DeKalb Communications supervisor Pam Frank confirmed that the officer had died.
A dozen or more police cars could be seen in television helicopter footage in the streets outside the post office.
“I was terrified. I was afraid the perpetrator was going to see me and come hijack my car and try to take me. I just put my head down,” said Susan Boozer, who witnessed the shooting as she pulled up to the building after getting off work at a nearby hardware store to check her personal post office box.
Boozer, 53, said she saw blue lights and “thought it was just somebody getting stopped for a speeding ticket.”
Then, she said she saw two Pine Lake police officers near a parked blue SUV, one with his gun drawn. Then, she saw the man with his arm around the chest of one of the officers and shouting at the other “’Go on and shoot. Go on and shoot.”’
The man then shot at the officer who was pointing the gun at him, and then he shot the one he was holding, she said.
“He was holding him when he shot him. He was a very angry man or hyped up on something,” Boozer said.
Gunfire then ensued between the man and the other officer. Boozer guessed that about 10 shots were fired before the man entered the post office.

Atlanta seems to be getting more gangsta by the month. First a court house shooting, now cop executions.

Six adults taking a break from a basketball game at a DeKalb County park were shot Tuesday evening when a car pulled up and men inside began shooting, according to authorities.
A 911 call sent officers from the county Police Department to Shoal Creek Park off Glenwood Road, just south of Decatur.
"There's no work on a motive or an exact suspect description," Officer Herschel Grangent said on Wednesday.
He said none of the injuries was life threatening and the most serious was a woman who wasn't shot but apparently got hurt when she fell to the ground when the shooting began.
Just before 8 p.m. several men were resting after shooting hoops when they noticed a moving car on White Oak Drive.
Two witnesses said at least two men exited the car, walked toward the court and began firing what they said was a type of semiautomatic weapon.
"It just came from nowhere," said Terrance Gresham, who said he had been playing basketball at the court.
He lay on the ground and stayed motionless through what seemed to him like 20 shots, he said.
Investigators interviewed several uninjured witnesses at the scene, including 26-year-old Tom Corleone, who was at the court.
"They started shooting. Just a random shooting," said Corleone, who added that his girlfriend was one of the victims. |
