Just back from the event of the year over here. What a day! Doesn't really compare to the line-up in the UK but its the best us Irish could have hoped for.
We arrived at bout 5, a lot later than planned seen as it started at 2, but we made the most of it anyway. Having missed out on seeing Steve Angello, who suppoesidly played a stormer, my day started off in the Godskitchen arena, which was my main arena for the day. Got there during Eddie Halliwell's set. Thumpin tunes, good mixing and the usual scratching was a good starter for the day but the rumours flying round bout Eddie's 'pre-programmed' mixing slighlty took the gloss of that set.
Up next was Fergie. Not my cup of tea so took the chance to check out Umek and Marco Bailey in the techno tent. Absolutely bangin techno. Both class sets, really got us and the whole place rockin.
After the techno lads lifting the spirits we headed back to the main arena just in time for the my favourite set of the day - Armin. His uplifting style, heavy beats and interaction with crowd completely lifted everyone. The place was buzzing. From classics like Binary Finary to Marco V's More Than A Life Away he got everyone hopping. I think he ended up doing about 2 and a half hours (Oakey was supposedly late, what a surprise) and it was the best 2 and a half hours of the day. He even played a request for me - Hammer & Bennet 'Language'(Santiago Nino Mix), by far my highlight of the day.
After that came Oakey, who IMO was one of the better acts. If you take him for what he is, a millionaire who has done it all and doesn't give a anymore, he did his fair share. Threw out classics like Seven Cities and Y-Traxx and although his mixing was shocking at times, i forgave him purely because he played U2 'Where The Streets Have No Name'. A bit cliche, playing it on Irish soil, but in fairness got a great response.
Then came the worst set of the day from none other than, you guessed it, 'The Worlds Number 1'. I was hoping he would make up for his dreadful set in Dublin in March but it just got worse. Boring, uninteresting tech trance made up most his set. The same thing over and over. Poor mixing. I don't have time to keep going, but what was more annoying was the fact that most of the crowd felt like it was their juty to keep cheering him, like some sort of god. In one word: e. The nail in the Tiesto coffin for me. And throwing on Adagio For Strings at the end did not save him this time.
We didn't hang round to see Lisa Lashes but instead finished the day on a huge high by going to the last hour of Sasha & Digweed. Ive never seen them live before but it certainly wont be my last time. They were brilliant, technically spot on. Funky, original and uplifting, they really topped of a great day for us.
The only bad side is that you cant be in more than one arena at the same time. We had a deadly time, roll on next year(fingers crossed)... |

Went to this and in hell it was awesome. I travelled from Longford to Kildare on Saturday night. Got to bed @ 2am and up at 6am to get ready. Headed to Heuston Station in Dublin (30 euro Taxi :() for the Train to Millstreet @ 8:30. By now I was looking forward to it, but not in a big big way with being a little tired.
The train down was great craic and expensive (38 euro for return). Got a few cans to liven me up and there was a group of lad's from Malahide who brought a cd player and were banging out Adagio for Strings. To show their unique knowledge of trance were shouting "Go On Tiesto" to Eyal Barkan - Voyage :P:P. The flouting law was particularly brutal (Alcohol/Smoking and many many more :D)
Got to Millstreet in Cork @ 11:20. Went for the long walk into the town, train station is quite a bit out...walked past the camping area and the Arena into Town to get some more alcohol. Only bought a Bottle of Aftershock. Had it poured into an empty plastic bottle and threw away the cap thinking all was good for the security. By now its about 1pm so time to head the the Green Glens. Walked up to the gates, passed the security and up to the main gate. Went for a walk about the car park, lay on the grass, chatted to a few women and stuff then started queueing about 13:30. Gates opened late, Mark Kavanagh was going strong from 2pm but gates only opened at 2:20. Got searched pretty throughly and had my 1/2 bottle of Aftershock thrown into the bin, where were the signs saying no Alcohol allowed??? I seen the ones about glass and cans but i was gutted, i could have skulled it but the bitch took it and threw it in the bin! After getting through i was a bit pissed about my loss (after paying 40 euro for the thing to have 20 thrown away...) but i was in, and time to head to the Kitchen.
I bought me a 10 euro Timetable tags and entered the Godkitchen arena. Place was almost empty but Mark was giving it a fair whack. Gradually filled up but by now i had my glow sticks out and was dancing away with my friends ;)
Mark had a good set then John came on and took over. Pumped out some really trancey tunes which got most of the crowd to know what they were in for (Godkitchen was the first area most went to see what it was like, after all, their knowledge of trance was impeccable :P) John played on and got a load more folk dancing away. Great set altogether, even though i shall need a ID for a track i have on video :)
Eddie Halliwell was up next and was going strong, though by now i was getting tired having been up since 6am and on my feet since i got off the train at 11. There was a little sound hitch and all the speakers just went dead to all, amidst the massive cheers of "Eddie!! Eddie!!!", i really felt bad for him :P Place was really heating up, half full by this stage and plenty in the seating area too. Eddie's set ended with a bang and the whole lot was excellent. Fergie came on and whilst the first track wasnt too bad, it went downhill from there...Went out to get something to eat after 4 minutes of torture, and a little water too (3 euro a bottle, daylight robbery!). Listened to some other tents, lay down for a bit and then headed back into the Kitchen for the highlight of our evening, Armin Van Buuren.
The man started great, and somehow got Better!!! Absolutely stunning, i had crowdsurfed through a FULL arena to get to 1 row from the front barrier to see my GOD of Trance. And i wasnt dissappointed at all. He was absolutely loving it. Smiling (when doesn't he?) and dancing and spinning the vynils and really getting the crowd going. The only downside was this cute little skank (a contradiction of terms i know) asking me "Is this tiesto?" to which i set her straight!! Saw some guy at the barrier shout at Armin and Armin couldnt hear what he said so he signed to him to get a pen and write it down (djpaulc if that was you with the blue/white jersey on ya who got the pen, i poked ya in the back and wanted to ask you to write Serenity on the page too but you never turned around :D). Armin really heated up then and at 21:04 he played the song that was worth 61.50 alone, Serenity. I knew it was coming, it was a matter of time, and i was awarded for my patience. The crowd loved it, thinking it was an Adagio for Strings Remix, but i loved it for its AvB feat Jan Wayne. The piano solo and then the massive lift, got me jumping for the roof while holding my camera phone among the whistles going crazy and ruining some of the audio (not that its great with it being a camera/video phone and me being about 50ft away from these massive speakers :D)
Armin wrapped up a fantastic set which ran into a massive 2hours 40 minutes (19:30 - 22:10) after Paul Oakenfold was late *suprise*. Went outside to get more to eat and a sit down, my feet were getting sore now I'll tell ya! Headed back into Godskitchen (where else?) and sat down again for a while, watching the floor fill to max capacity in anticipation of what was probably the only DJ most knew (Tiesto). He came on at 23:10 to massive shouts of "Tiesto!!" and cheers after Oakenfold overran his set by 10 minutes to make it an hour (should have been an hour and a half).
Tiesto's set started off slow, wasnt really enjoying myself until about 40 minutes in when he let it rip with Forever Today (which some poor soul had wrote on a peice of brown paper and held up at the front barrier for about 20 minutes before Tiesto asked for it to be brought up to him - thats right, i crowdsurfed to the front again) and he went on with others such as Ernesto vs Bastian - Dark Side Of The Moon and got us all pumping. It was 12:55 before we knew it and Lisa Lashes had made an appearance to a heap of wolf whistles and the like. Tiesto throw on Adagio for Strings and everybody went absolutely crazy. The man looked like he was enjoying himself way too much to give up the set and hopped onto the Deck Table while Lisa jacked in to catch up the beats of Adagio. He grabbed an Irish flag that was thrown up and started moving about with it while the crowd shouted for more and cheered like they would lose their voices when he left. And leave he did but not before unplugging his headphones, wrapping them up and throwing them off into the Crowd. I was about 10ft from where they landed but couldnt get in quick enough, some dude grabbed them and slinked off while others looked frantic for them. Gotta give it to the guy who got them, that made his night, he probably stuck them in his bag so they wouldnt get broke :)
Lisa came in and looked pretty well on the sauce by then. She mixed very well with Eurhythmic's Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These and Snap's I've got the power. She was really hard and fast for the early bit and she saw us get tired and slowed it down a little. Also got another Tri-color from the same group of lads who gave one to Tiesto with the words "Magik - Tiesto - Music" ..except hers said "Lisa, are u good for a Lash?" ...nice thinking lads!
Eventually we calmed down at 01:55 when she turned on the lights and the MC came on to talk to us about enjoying Global Gathering and we all shouted for one more tune! Lisa telling us to shout for 5 more so we all did. She pumped one more tune out and threw a Cowboy hat into the front crowd again (i missed this one by a whisker but there was no point in whipping it out of somebodies hand cause it would be wrecked and unfair!) Then, she down a whole glass of champagne and threw the glass out to the crowd aswell (she sure was on the sauce at that stage having steadily drunk 4/5 pints during her set). The lights came on, the show was over, we were told to leave.
I was absolutely shattered by now, feet where really sore but i was buzzing! Went down for the train home at 2:30 but we had a public ticket and this was a private train. After much hassle we got on with about 50 others after telling them the train down was like one from India (with bodies handing out the windows and stuff). I ended up sittdown down on the floor by the luggage rack and my friends took the 2 tiers of the rack. Fell asleep on the train home and we arrived back at the station at 5:30. Waited for a Taxi to come on duty at 7am and sure enough, by then we were frozen. Paid another 30 for a taxi home and crawled into bed at 8am. Slept right till 2pm on Monday afternoon then went back to sleep till 5:30pm.
I was ready to do it all over again to be fair. By then i had more sleep on me than i did going to GG in the firstplace!
Overall, a very very very VERY good atmosphere at a great event, with world-class DJ's in the flesh within 20 feet of me, an experience never to be missed IMO. So im going again next year ;)
*i know i said crowd-surfing but i meant just crowd-storming, i wouldnt really crowdsurd if you paid me* |
