Yep, i have learnt that, when i was new on the forum, i wanted to be a mod. but i was only a junior addict. I have been on the forum for about 6 months now, and will b on a lot in the future, now i have 24-7 internet, woohoo. But i have learnt that the mods do a good job, and this forum is running very smoothly.
I now think that if you7 help people as much as you can in this forum, it is very rewarding. I would love to be a mod, not for power or, whatever, but to help this forum. Which i think a lot of established members would want, and if a mod was needed i know some memebers on here who should get the job.
But this forum is running well, and as swamper will tell you, there is no need for more mods at the mo.
Asking will not get you anywhere.
Actually i am now waffling. What i am saying is, the mods are doing well, and i am glad this forum is here. If it wasnt my trance collection would b a lot smaller and not as diverse |

people ask to be mods coz deep down everyone knows u can be sure its done 100% right unless u do it urself, so without doing it urself, u are not totally knowing its done right, so everyone wants to be a mod so they no do its done right, to them, if you no what i mean? hopefully u do...
ps. i am a mod |

Well, I think that too many people want to be mods without quite understanding the sort of pressures that go with it.
I know that the three main mods on the homeofmusic boards were putting in 7-8 hours a day on the boards when it was at is busiest (just before it closed down for that three month period earlier this year) and I'm sure that the mods on this board would be putting in similar sorts of hours. I mean, that's a full time job, a hell of a lot of responsibility. You would want to be fairly certain that you were up to that sort of work-load before you even consider putting your hand up (and I remember someone saying a couple of months back - and it rings true - that anyone who volunteers to be a mod without being approached first isn't really mod material in the first place).
I think - without necessarily referring to the people who have volunteered for mod duties here - that too many people have this preconception that moderatorship is all about being dished out respect and being placed above everyone else on the site. The reality - as I'm sure the mods here will be happy to point out - couldn't be further from the truth. The respect has to be earned and even when you get it you can't believe that you are "above" everyone else on the boards otherwise you'll lose that respect just as quickly. So, as someone who understands what moderatorship is all about without actually having endured it myself, I believe I can say that being a modertor isn't the sort of thing you can just enter capriciously: you have to be able to put in a lot of time and a lot of effort without getting the sort of thanks you may feel that you're entitled to. And it is a very thankless job (how many of us here have criticised a mod for doing/not doing something without thanking them for the hundereds of good things they have done?).
Anyway, I just think it needed to be said: if you want to be a mod, you have to earn the respect first (by acting as a modertor should - helpful and concilliatory) without just being handed the name and powers on plate. If you can persevere through this for several months, and you are willing to put in the time and effort necessary without the thanks you probably deserve, then and only then should you consider putting your hand up for the incessant duties that being a moderator entails.
Oh, and while I'm on this line of thought, I'll take the opportunity to tell the current mods that the work they are doing is both worthwhile and appreciated. So long as they keep doing the job they're doing at the moment, I don't think we'll need any more mods in the near future (I'm digging this flame-free atmosphere). Keep it up guys. |

what u say is true, but not always what happens, Lynx got his moderation powers by asking, sure no1 can just ask, lynx has been here ages and during his peak, was 50 posts a day, and every single one constructive in some way, and has be basically lived on these boards, every single thread he would have posted in, and lynx basically asked to be a mod and got it. i had my eye on polls for a while and when i saw people posting non-polls and having there own little flame battles i said to asked swamper if i could be mod in polls and as i have been here a while and not acted like an ass (apart from with yevat for them that can remember...but that was just a bit of fun:p) he was granted it. JdDark got his simply coz he has a good knowlage of tracks, and swamp said in chat "i need a mod for unknown tracks" and coz JdDark has a good track mind he was it. so its not always the case, mind you, take fraggle as an example, he always behaves and is always positive, and during one of the "we need a new mod" periods his name was forever mentioned, but he was moving house so couldnt devote enough time for it, so basically be you, and thats it really :)

heheh, the whole "mod" thing cracks me up! Peeps on here think its about being "above" everyone else, renegade hit it right on the button! You can tell this by everyone wanting to be one... and for the reasons they give. Its like a bunch of kids fighting over a hamburger from McDonalds or something... Renegade i think i started the whole "anyone who volunteers to be a mod isn't mod material anyway" thing.... i made a big deal about that couple months back.... LoL.
**and the best part of it is, that these peeps will create a mod job, EVEN when one isn't needed! EVEN if swamper isn't looking for a mod, they will constantly be saying "we need more mods!" .... LoL. I think the mods right now are doing an EXCELLENT job. It's a lot of work, and i have mad respect for those that are doing such a great job. :)
speaking of JdDark, where has he been... he was really good with the track ID-ing, and i haven't seen him post in months! :)

i heard my name...:) heheh. yeah, being a mod is an extreme priviledge. i'm just glad that there aren't as many spammers and lamers around anymore. they screwed the boards up pretty badly at one point. but swamp assembled a team of mods pretty quickly to deal with it. that's how it's been ever since. :)
we're the mod squad. hehehehheh.:stongue: |
