Bunch to say here...
I've seen ALOT of talk about over-payment of hockey players, but in comparison to other (american pass-time) sports. NHL players hit somewhere middle range paychecks as far as pro sports go.
Agreed, Lacross is hard as hell, fun and just as vicious as rugby in my opinion. The comments about hockey players not doing much for thier money... To those people I say, Try obsorbing the impact of a 6'2 guy that weighs around 240 with pads skating full tilt into you with nothing to cushion you but the unforgiving ice then boards. Also this is the only major sport that players are required to play with knives attached to thier feet :)
My hockey career was ended due to a dirty hit that almost put me in a wheel chair for the rest of my life. So anybody that thinks hockey is a cushy sport, please think again.
On the flipside I do actually think that NHL players have slid a bit from what it means to play hockey. In the long run I'd almost enjoy watching World Juniors hockey. They energy and amount of punishment they dish out would put some of the NHL fellas on the bench for a period or two.
Okay I'm done. |

As a referee, I never tolerated that garbage. Any hit from behind, the paperwork and having to possibly defend my decision later on were the furthest things from my mind. In minor hockey, regardless contact/non-contact (though in contact the line is a tad hazier), hitting from behind and anything or the sort where an intent to injure was apparent, you automatically slapped the book at the guy. Major plus a game, or match plus a game. Then you send it in to the league for review and potential suspension based on your recount of the event(s). Luckily I never witnessed anyone get injured severly, but I have had my share of watching those get injured and have to leave the game. It's not a sport without danger, that's for sure.

Paying a joke like Bobby Holik over $8 million. Thanks Glen Sather. $2.5 for Marek Malik? Are you kidding me? They're only paying Sopel $1.2, not even HALF of Malik, and Sopel is 4X the defender. He's more mobile, he hits more, he scores more, he makes overall smarter decisions and takes less dumb penalties. Granted these guys spend 1/3 of their year (half the season) out of town and at least 1/5-1/3 of the year (the other half) at the rink (games, practices, conditioning, physicals, strategy, team meetings, contract obligated social and community events, etc), still, paying guys 5-10 million who don't deserve it? THe last few years were pay races. Players went where the cash was. Teams like Pittsburgh and Washington just dump and dump and dump.
The new CBA isn't perfect, but it has, pros and cons tallied, is an improvement. |

| Oh don't get me wrong I don't agree with the amount that these pro players get payed when it all started just for love of the game. What I was getting at was the complaints that they were wo over payed when there are baseball plyers and such getting far more than most hockey players even...and for doing less in my opinion. hit a ball run...wait wait wait..run run run....I know there is more to it but the over-all physicality of it in comparison to hockey.....well i don't think there really is a comparison even worth making. Hockey players do more, work harder and get paid less...Still not saying the high sums are right but it seems a little unjustified...Money does make the world go 'round though so there isn't much to be done about it either way. |
