I think they needed to cut a couple teams off, ones that weren't making any money, ones that have no hockey tradition, and ones where the fans don't give a rats patooie about them. While watching games 2 years ago, I could see more red seats free than there were full in some arenas, (all-be-it the red seats are more cash to get into). All in all though, the changes to the CBA have made it more viable for smaller teams to build up and stop big teams like New York Rangers from dumping 9 million a year on guys like fckin bobby holik and 7-8 on lindros and like 7-10 on jagr. Hell, they paid Malik 2.5 million, MALIK! Ugh.
The positive though is that teams don't have to wait five - ten years anymore to re-coop after having to dump or lose guys. Ie chicago, washington and pittsburgh, who all haven't done squat in years. pittsburgh and washington are getting high draft picks, but can't what's the point of having a pavel bure or an alexander ovechkin if you don't have anyone to play with them?
W.e, thanks for the mess bettman. The only good thing he's done lately is put bertuzzi back in! |

watch out for the coyotes though. wayne had his team in place before the lockout with hull, nedved, comrie, doan, nagy, ricci, johnson, morris, mara etc etc! now that he is coaching they are gonna be a very dangerous team.
and wayne has some young guys the coyotes have recruited over the years to work with. so dont be suprised if we see the great one working his magic this year.
how ever i wish wayne announced his decision a bit earlier as phoenix might of been able to sign modano if gretzky was coach!!! |

mara, doan and nagy are good, morris not bad, but a lot of those guys are overrated. hull may still be able to put up 20, but to do so he'd have to be a bit selfish. he's olllld. nedved can still get a few points, but he's past his prime, if he ever had one. ricci, get a hair cut. boucher is not a no. 1. they need a goalie who can be consistent. as for draft picks, haven't heard much. they have been drafting mediocrly at best.
granted phoenix will improve, but even with gretzky, we'll have to see if they make the playoffs, and if then, 6-8th slot.
i can see calgary and edmonton being more dangerous, san jose continues to do well, dallas, colorado and detroit are still competent and dangerous teams, the canucks should continue to do well in the 'new age' of hockey. chicago could improve a lot if they can play well with their new bought team. we'll see how the new st.louis does with demitra and pronger gone. anaheim and nashville might do okay, doubtful they'll make it though. minnesota should tank this year, but they always seem to surprise sometimes, especially with gaborik still there and two mediocre goalies. |
