Personally, these newer incarnations don't have the appeal and feel of the older, less graphic NES/SNES/PS1 games, but I would still check them out.
The old Castlevania from 1987 was such a simple game, but so fun to play. Fighting Dracula at the end was a bitch! My fav. boss from the entire series will ALWAYS be The Grim Reaper. His ultimate incarnation IMO was in Super Castlevania IV for SNES, where he was transparent, had red eyes and had shadows trial behind him as he floated in the room just before you faced Dracula at the end.
Castlevania II introduced the RPG concept with leveling up but still lacked some luster from the first game.
Castlevania III was BADASS, as you got to select new characters, but the sharing soul/energy concept was a little tacky, imo.
Super Castlevania IV was AMAZING. I would say THIS is the best in the entire series when it comes to whip-whielding Belmonts. The ONLY Castlevania game where you could whip in multiple directions. The music, even though it was 16 bit, was still incredible.
Still great games, Symphony of the Night with Alucard was SO good and intricate. The RPG concept was full blown in here.
So what are your thoughts on these games? |

Castlevania. Well what can I say? One of the greatest game franchises of all time. Love the first one. Gotta love the triple shot boomerang! The 2nd one was intersting, so unique from all the rest but I really liked it. 3rd one was very hard but still good although its my least favorite in the series.
Now I'm with you on Super Castlevania IV! Definitely the best in the series. Game looks gorgeous even to this day. One of my alltime favorite games ever.
Recently, I went through all 3 Castlevania titles for the Gameboy Advance and I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 of them. Check them out if you haven't. Great way to kill time on a plane flight. |

dark angel, wots with these old school game threads?!?!?!? i'm gonna shoot u!!!!!!!!!!!

castlevania4 - i remember getting my grubby mitts on this classic back in 91? 90?... wow. it was like being a kid in a candy store. it pushed my snes beyond what i thought was humanly possible, rotating all the sprites around, with the multi color pixelated gorgeous graphics. it introduced us to the whip. and the gameplay was challenging and perfectly balanced w/o being too difficult. the music was the best in the series imo. this game completely blew the older and more challenging nes games out of the water and made me feel proud to be a snes owner.
castlevania:SOTN - holy crapazoid. what a challenge. gorgeous graphics, i thought only the saturn was supposed to have awesome 2d gfx!!! wtf! anyways, spent around 20hrs leveling up, searching all the nooks and crannies of this game only to find out... there's a whole new completely new game at the end! wow!
i bought one of the GBA games but have yet to play them.. once again, the spoiled gamer, not willing to go back to 2d gfx |

Castlevania SOTN, is one of the best games i ever played. if not the best 2D game i played.
i finished it so many times, and the music is a piece of art.
and since you brought this up i need to get my hands on it.
and no matter how many times i play it never gets boring.
this game is a Masterpiece. |

| I remember playing Castlevania 1 and 2 on the NES, And Super Castlevania 4 on the SNES, Those were some great games back in the days, It's unfortunate that the newer Castlevania games don't quite live up to the originals, If I'm not mistaken, The latest one coming out, Your character is armed with a sword rather then the whip, And I believe the character is no longer a Belmont, I always thought, That the whip was one of the coolest weapons in the game, The weapon was pretty long and you were able to kill the enemy long before they could touch you, It was in greater use in Super Castlevania 4 when you could use the whip to swing across many areas. |
