A little help in Atlanta, please

Hello everyone!
I was wondering if anybody could offer me a little help in Atlanta.
I moved here several years ago and I came from Florida. I went to school in Gainesville and really enjoyed hanging out at Simons and on certain nights, Florida Theater. It was just good people doing their own things, awesome DJs who just cared about spinning great music, reasonably priced drinks, and people just trying to have a good time and that's about it.
I've taken the past several years off, but thought it would be fun to get back into the scene a bit. The only thing is, so far Atlanta has left a bad taste in my mouth. I tried places like eleven50 and the Velvet Room....sure, they have decent DJs and the clubs are nice enough, but it's just so commercial. It seems like the whole point now is just to make money with ridiculous covers and overpriced drinks. The biggest problem, though, is the people. The scene seems to be filled with people who just want to see and be seen. I've found these clubs to be glorified meat markets with the local guidos and former sorority girls checking out the local flavor of the month. People are all dresed the same in their midtown black and they're not even particularly friendly to chat with.
Where I come from, you dress however you want and just strike up a conversation with whoever seems interesting. The concept of a dress code, radio remote, or artificially created line at the front door is alien to me.
I was just wondering if there are any cool places like this in Atlanta. You know, where the music is played for the sake of the music and the people are there just because they love the music, not because they just need a place to drink and try to act exclusive at their VIP tables.
Is the scene just that different in Atlanta, has it changed that much everywhere over the past several years, or am I just going to the totally wrong places? I would've liked to have checked out the Mark for Kimball Collins (one of my central Florida favorites), but I missed that....is it any better? Is there any place that is consistently good? I'm just looking to have a good time with no attitude.
Does it exist? Thanks! |
