Besides the keys is there an advantage in having one over the other. Do sound rack have more sounds or can you manipulate sounds easier or better etc....?????

As he said, the difference is the keys. Takes up less space.

Oh I see, that was easy.... so Im assuming you play the racks with a midi keyboard of some sort???

yes. rackmounted modules are usually cheaper because less raw materials and labour were used in their construction. they are more compact so you you can rack several of them up and it wont fill up your desk. + if you already have an ace keyboard (the access virus kB, or alesis q6/qs8 or a decent dedicated midi controller) you dont need to buy another keyboard if theres a rackmount version of it available. especially if one of those synths you are buying has an inferior keyboard to one you already own.

so when ptjor says the only difference is 'the keys' hes kind of right. if you dont need keys, get the rack version. in most cases theres no difference between the two other than that.

i'm afraid i dont fully agree with you...for example the diference at korg triton betwen the rack and the rest is that the sound module accept more expansion sound boards than any other keyboards + you can add 4 new cards that none of the keboards have.at roland it's a little bit different when we are talking about v-synth xt.on the module the D-beam and the VariPhrase is missing...there's more to say around that but i think that's enough for today....

USUALLY the keys and the racks are the same, but sometimes there are enhancements in the racks (ie JP-8080 with a couple extra voices and a vocoder) and sometimes certain things are taken out, usually for space considerations (ie expansion slots).
