strange (and probably stupid) question .. are you allowed to openly take pictures of police/their vehicles etc ?

Yep, you can take pics of them if they are on plain view, marked cars and uniformed officers where ever they are.

They sometimes don't like it spesh if they are flouting the law themselves but there is no law to say you can not take thier pic.

I think there's a simple solution to all your camera problems. I used it and purposely passed a red light late at night. Never got the ticket :disbelief

an even simpler solution - don't break the law when driving.
