If anyone saw the program and the following debate, it provided a few more perspectives that were unknown (to me at least)
Either way at least
The main arguments for pro legislation of narcotics was :
Reduction of drug related crime such as burglary, mugging and prostitution
Reduction of harm for users e.g less HIV risk for heroin users
Control of this market could mean extra money for the government
and a few other related things
The arguments against legislation were:
If its legal, there will be more abuse
How can there be a reduction of harm, if people are still dependent on it.
And the risks of long term health problems.
There is a point that if its legal, there will be more abuse. I would agree with that. HOWEVER, they were never specific about which drugs. I'm sure that you would see an increase in recreational drugs, due to the risks associated with its illegality being abolished. But it wouldn't be permanent. secondly, i don't think we'd see people going out to try crack and smack just becasue you can get it from the clinic down the road :rolleyes: :stongue:
Would you prefer it if there were more crack and smack addicts who had free access to the drug and could have their condition under control, as opposed to them robbing houses and old women?
If drugs were legalised, and i'm still referring to heroin and crack, then i would think that the places you can get this stuff from would also be actively trying to get them off the drug rather than keep them on it.
the risks of long term health problems are negligible, becuase that will happen whether a drug is illegal or not. those risks aren't going to go away just because a drug is freely available.
I think that instead of a full legislation of drugs would be a dip into the unknown, and worth a try. I don't think it would be a step backwards from the current policies. At worst, it would stay level with what happens now. |

i got offered weed in the street the other day... drugs are all around as it is... it's just in Amsterdam they're more visible |
