I tend to motivate myself via stimulants.. but I don't recommend it for the majority of people.
1) Long periods of central nervous stimulation lead to even longer downtimes. Furthermore, some people try to shorten such downtime through increased stimulant use.. this can be disasterous to his/her physical/mental health.
2) Although stimulants motivate you to work, sometimes they also inhibit your ability to create insightful and creative work. Stimulants are good if you already know what you are doing, but if you are trying to formulate a well thought out essay they might cloud your reasoning. I try to write an outline and do the majority of the needed reasearch before I sit down to write the actual essay. |

I have learned to associate more pain with "not doing" than with "doing" - thus procrastination is not an issue.
Edit: Some things I have associated pain with "doing". But only things that I shouldn't be doing. Confused? That is ok.
Not doing = massive pain, doing = pleasure. |
