DAVID MORALES
Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1961, and looking more like someone who constantly works out (which I'm sure he does), David Morales is one of America's top remixers of all time. He has proven to be resilient as time has progressed, perhaps since he was actually shot in his youth. His career was put into motion when he was taken in by legendary DJ Larry Levan of the Paradise Garage (Morales' early days were also spent at The Loft). His style could be considered "classy garage" - very melodic with flashes of disco and touches of tribal influence when he chooses to use them. And when he has his hands on a female vocal track....his record speaks for itself. Some have said that his first remix work was for "Sometimes Love" by Insync; but his first major success was Imagination's "Instinctual" in 1987. Since that release, for about 13 years, his career just kept skyrocketing. His seminal solo remixes include (among many others): Robert Owens' "I'll Be Your Friend," Pet Shop Boys' "So Hard," Jamiroquai's "Space Cowboy," Incognito/Jocelyn Brown's "Always There," Ce Ce Peniston's "Finally," Urban Soul's "Show Me," and Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover," the first of many fruitful collaborations with the pop/R&B diva. He and For The Record pool head Judy Weinstein co-founded Def Mix Productions in the late 1980s, where he met one of his idols, Frankie Knuckles. Together, they were a team that one could always depend on for a classic treatment. Just ask Alison Limerick ("Where Love Lives") and Janet Jackson ("Because of Love"). He has also worked with other talented musicians on his mixes like Satoshi Tomiie, Eric Kupper, Davidson Ospina, Terry Burrus, Joey Moskowitz, and more. Whenever he released a Red Zone mix, one could pretty much bank on it being a floorfiller. His own recording career is a bit sporadic but is pretty lengthy, too. His first artist album, 1993's "The Program," showed a strong reggae influence while keeping garage heads happy with appearances by Ce Ce Rogers, Sly Dunbar, and a then-unknown Anastacia (wonder why they haven't hooked up since...hmmm). His alter egos include The Face, which produced his monster Chi-Lites-sampling global anthem, "Needin' U," and its sequel with Juliet Roberts, Brooklyn Friends, with the live-instrumentation bliss of "Philadelphia," The Boss, with the tribal roller that is "Conga", and Moca, a collabo with fellow music vet Albert Cabrera for "Higher". His remixes have tapered off a bit since 2000, leaving him to concentrate more on his DJ gigs and working on his second artist album. Preceding by the smash single, "How Would U Feel," that second album, "2 Worlds Collide," is scheduled for release by the end of October 2004 for most of the world; it was set to be in U.S. stores on Nov. 30, 2004, distributed through Ultra Records.
