French TA's, forgive me :(

Perfect_Cheezit
I was curious to know if, as an American, it would be a good idea to visit France at all right now. I don't mean to be ignorant, but I know that our two countries aren't on the best of terms politically right now, and I'm wondering if as an American I will receive some flak for being a tourist to Paris or the surrounding countryside. Again Im not trying to stereotype but I honestly dont know what kind of reaction I will get as a tourist to France. I speak no French, but I do have a deep appreciation and respect for French history and art...will I be given a cold shoulder the way Americans stereotype French to do?

Wait for the election of Kerry, if Kerry is elected all will be ok for all american not only in France but in the world.

If Bush is elected, stay home !!!

No I'am joking, you are welcome. French people are not stupid.

you'll be flamed, bashed, murdered in town and exposed to all eyes so we can celebrate your death :toothless

no, j/k, though we disagree with Mr Bush (not more than other europeans, in fact, it's just that we claimed it louder & first), it hasn't been any further here (no advertising on TV as i heard there was in your country).
and yeah, you'll be welcome as any respectful tourists coming to France would be :)

Your post reminds me a few situations I lived on several forums or chats recently. The fact is that when I meet an american guy on the web, I'm always afraid he's like the cliche we have of american people, and that consequently he doesn't like french people because he thinks we don't like american ones... ^^ And most of the time, we start with a discussion on the subject that made us meet, and then come to the subject of our nationalities. Then we share our doubts and conclude they were completely obsolete. The fact is that I do have, like a lot of French people (not everybody, but a lot), a negative image of your country. Mostly because of your dumb president, and all the evil things he's done that the entire world disagrees with: most of us think american people should react, and the fact that we see you so "passive" explains our bad impression.

But finally everytime I speak with an american person, especially when he/she's around my age, I notice that he's afraid of the thought of foreign people over his country still more than I am from his one. Most of the time he also is against Bush's policy, and explains people didn't really vote for him! ^^ And so we both get surprised by the excellent converstion we have, and stay in a good relationship.

All that to say that you shouldn't be afraid to come to France. First you'll be there as a tourist, and it won't be written on your head that you're american. So just enjoy the country, sure that if you're looking at people in a strange way to check their reaction when they cross over you, you'll not be in the better position! :p Then is you come to meet people, it's probable that you'll shortly be invited to share your feelings on political grounds. Just tell people about your opinion on our culture just as you did here, and the doubts you had before coming. I'm 100% sure you'll be welcome then, because if most of us hate Bush, we also have a big respect and/or interest for the american people, its power and its culture.

Oh, and if unfortunately you are a pro-Bush (we all make mistakes! :toothless: ;) ), just make your best to hide it, or you'll have to hide yourself! :nervous: :disbelief :clown: ;)
