I'm so pissed off right now (Doom 3)

dbb
I have a f**** Precision workstation with dual 2,66 GHz Xeons, 1 Gb
266 MHz ECC DDR-RAM, and a Quadro FX 1000 with 256 mb ram.

And the game lags as HELL.

The game runs at 800x600, medium quality and it's almost impossible to play.

Well well, I'm sure there's alot of other dissapointed people out there. And I realize that my card isn't actually meant for gaming, but come on! Dual Xenons!? Do I have to steal a supercomputer from the go vernment to play this game?

Cheers.... :)

I'm guessing its your video card as my processor is just a singe xp2600+ and I also have 1GB ram at 333Mhz DDR PC2700.

My card is also lots older than yours, its a GF4TI4200 and I can play on High settings across the board with 800x600.

Here are some links to some tweaks that maybe will help you out

99% of games are design for 1 cpu. your dual setup is a waste and u are also using Workstation video cards. it might or might not have all the features of the consumer video card but it is optimize for appz not gamez. get a retail stuff not workstation stuff for gamez

I feel your pain. Some suggesetions...

Isn't the Quadro FX 1000 a card that excels in opengl apps and used for graphic workstations that do CAD, 3DSMax, Maya, and that type of thing? Its not really made for gaming is it? I'm wondering if its holding you back. That card's direct3d performance might be lacking but I could be wrong. What is your 3DMark 2003 score with your system? You can compare your scores to others with the same setup on the Futuremark website as you to help determine what is going wrong.

Finally, and this helped my performance BIGTIME, go into your Doom III directory and into the Base folder. Now edit the DoomConfig.cfg file. Go down and find the value seta image_cacheMegs "20" Change that 20 to 256 since you have 1 GB of RAM. Now run the game and you should notice a big increase in your FPS. After making this tweak, I'm now able to play the game at 1024x768 at High Quality and its totally smooth whereas before that tweak, I had to run it in 800x600 at Medium Quality and it choked all over the place. Good luck!

Also check out this tweak:

This is a guarenteed way to get a MASSIVE performance increase to your game, at the expense of taking up a little more hard drive space (2 gigs approx). I went from running low quality at 800x600 to running High Quality on 1024x768. This improves load times AND framerate/details.

There is a catch! By doing this, you temporarily can't connect to pure multiplayer servers. You have been warned (I'll tell you how to revert it at the end)

After installation, the Doom III Folder consists only of the doom3.exe and some .PK4 files. Those PK4 files includes the entire game (sounds, videos, textures etc.) compressed. They are normally uncompressed in mid game, which is very hard on your CPU. Lets fix this!

1. Make a copy of ALL the files in C:\Program Files\Doom 3\base. This is some big filage, but if you want to revert to MP without reinstalling you need to do it.

2. Unrar the following .pk4 files (just pretend they are .rar's and open them with winrar) into the C:\Program Files\Doom 3\base folder (each one should unrar a single folder such as textures or models):

pak000.pk4
pak001.pk4
pak002.pk4
pak003.pk4
pak004.pk4 (This one has many files, put them all in \Base and over right any that apply.

3. Now delete the files above (pak000-004) or move them to another folder for storage so you can revert to multiplayer.

When you want to revert to multiplayer, restore everything you had before and get rid of the new stuff. I'm not sure if the folder "maps" is the same or not, so make sure you back that up.

When in normal mode, you should have "maps" "savegames" "config.spec" "doomConfig.cfg" "doomkey" "game00.pk4" and "gamex86.dll", nothing else.

The game is CPU dependent more than anything. Think about it.

Yea Doom 3 acquires a really good video card. My best pick is either the new ATi radeon x800 series or the GFX 6800. But I still think you would be fine with a ATi 9800 series or a GFX5900/50 Ultra :)

I cannot believe that ID software would develop a game without being able to use mutli-processors, either its available right now, or it will be available with a next patch.
