I'm thinking of purchasing one of these... the specs look amazing, as do the the sounds/presets/tweakability, etc. I've been reading some mixed reviews - so one sided they seem like theyre either being written by Roland employees or Yamaha/Korg employees :p

can anyone without a corporate ajenda please give me some helpful info on how this workstation would compliment my trance production?

Overview
The Standard By Which All Other Workstations Are Measured.
The Fantom-X Series are the world's first workstation keyboards to give musicians nearly 1GB of wave memory when fully expanded and powerful 128-voice polyphony. The synthesis section's new waves include a gorgeous 88-key split stereo-sampled piano, plus room for 4 SRX expansions. The sampler can be upgraded to 544MB of RAM, which provides enough recording time to use it like a digital recorder. The Fantom-X Series is also the first line of workstation keyboards with a color LCD screen. Between these features and their sleek new looks, the Fantom-X Series is poised to become the workstation of choice.

Rolands are nice keyboards, however, one of the things I dislike about phantoms is the interface. It's too clutered, hard to work (not very intuitive) and has a steep learning curve. Overall, the sounds are okay... Pianos are nice, pads, etc but overall - I would recommend Triton Studio over PhantomX. If you need reason why, just go to the store near you and ask them to launch a Triton studio demo of the song called "Midnight Sun". be sure to listen to the entire song. When it's done playing, after you pick up your jaw form the floor and realize that entire song was made using only triton, be sure to wipe the drool off. Afterwards, try pressing each of the keys to experience "RPS". You will not look towards roland again.

Also, the interface on triton is simple, there's cd burner, you can sample instantly, etc. Not to say that fantom doesn't try to compete, but overall I found tritons to be just amazing. One other thing you may want to try while mucking around with triton is use the ribbon controller, twist knobs, etc.

There are + and - to each - you're the one spending money, so it's your call. If you're in US, btw, and have a GC nearby and are lucky enough to find any close out Tritons Studios (Generation 1 - same as the new one, no difference at all. Just a way for Korg to sell more synths without shelling out for labor to upgrade the OS - something you can do yourself) - they can be picked up for around 1650 for 61 key or 76 key for $2000. E-bay is even cheaper still.

Have fun. ;)
