| don't know what you mean by standard cables but if it's what i'm thinking there are attachemts or convertes you can stick on cables to convert them to 1/4 inch to rca or XLR to rca or 1/4inch and so on. |

alright thanks. i assume there are 1/8" to rca converters too?
i have another question too:
the audiophile manual says the s/pdif output can be used for 5.1 surround systems. how am i supposed to setup for 5.1 using only one output??:conf: |

your audiophile shouldn't be hooked up to a surround-system at all. Did you buy that sound card to produce or did you buy it to watch movies?
the RCA outputs on the Audiophile are intended to be plugged into a pair of studio monitors. |

Hell if I know?? contact m-audio or check thier web site. from what i know..you should only need one s/pdif output for 5.1..it's digital signal not analog. |

S/pDif carries a digital signal. Generally it's a plain stereo signal, but some flag can be set so it carries a full surround signal (it's usually AC3 or DTS).
You connect this to a decoder. Some decoders have optical inputs (TOSlink), some have coaxial. If you want to use it with the M-audio, you'll need a decoder with coaxial input. That decoder will internally split the individual streams and reroute them to discrete analog outputs (unless you use the newer "full digital" surround systems of course).
So either, you'll have to connect the s/pdif to the decoder, and that decoder will have 6 outputs, which you can connect to your amps/speakers. There are speaker systems which have the decoder installed in one of the speakers (that one will usually serve as master speaker).
If on the other hand, you have no decoder, and you directly want discrete analog channels (so : software decoder), the Audiophile 24/96 won't do, as it only is has a dual analog output (stereo). |

ok thanks everyone, and thanks dj thy for being so detailed. really clears it all up.
alanzo, im gonna use this box both for producing and consuming. im fine producing on non-monitor speakers..dunno why everyone seems to think its a crime..maybe i just havent realized what miracle-machines monitors really are.
aight thx again |
