Promise Cherry Beach Sunday Afternoon Soundsystem
July 18, 2pm til midnight - FREE
This week's dj lineup is highlighted by and celebrates some especially powerful radio djs who helped lure us into the rhythmic and electronic music scene - Dr Trance and Curtis Smith. As well we welcome our friends from Muiraquita Capoeira, who you may remember from our anniversary at the Prop House last year, as they visit to share capoeira and promote their special show next weekend.
Don Berns aka Dr Trance
Without Dr Trance there may not have been any Promise parties. In about 1990, Dave heard a fully mixed dj set for the first time on Dr Trance's late night show Technopolis on 100.7 coming in a bit fuzzy across the water to St Catherines from Toronto. It was his first experience hearing fully mixed rhythmic music simply evolving from soundscape to soundscape and he was captivated and hooked. Dr Trance has played at the first raves most of us have ever been to and has always been a strong personality in the whole scene. We welcome him down to his first ever appearance at a party on Cherry Beach.
Curtis Smith
Curtis Smith has been converting people over to the sounds of rare soul, funk, jazz, even blues for over a decade. Our friend Sven who has been an active participant in the Promise Soundsystem this year requested that we have him play. He was the first dj to bring these sounds to Sven's ears and convince him to explore this beautiful realm of rhythmic and sampled music. This influential and diligent dj has a weekly show on Monday nights on CKLN and is well respected by djs from all over the city.

Bring a frisbee, bring a kite, bring a handy sweater, bring a dog (only nice dogs), bring your lover and a hammock. And pass the time on this lazy sunny sunday afternoon with friends and friends of friends.
Take Lakeshore Blvd East of Toronto, just past Parliament Turn sound south down Cherry Street all the way to the parking lot at the end and go east into the parking lot at your left. At the furthest east of the parking lot, walk along the bike path, then turn left up into the trail into the woods…you'll hear music. If you end up at the lake, you are going the wrong way.
Biking to Cherry Beach is easy along the trails beside the lakeshore, and there seems to be a new bus service that goes all the way down to the beach finally.
things to think about:
Please don't bring more than you plan to take back out with you - leave no trace.
Bring something warm and something to sit on and also something to keep sun off your head
If weather turns foul the day of, call 323.0361 for the emergency update |
