Willie Knox has been a leader in the Techno Scene creating unique environments for a variety of events in Ontario and the United States including Mayworks and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Willie as former owner of Speed has been involved in record distribution and production, several party promotion companies and two stores that catered to the techno industry. He was a leader in the Toronto House scene with Ritual. Ritual 9, dubbed Expression. Willie’s outdoor and indoor environments will transform the Lookout, the Brigantine Room and the whole of Ann Tindal Park into alternate universe of colour and light.

The Great Wall of Graffiti
Ann Tindal Park - All Weekend

From an underground roots art movement Graffiti Art has become a consistent visual part of the urban art landscape. Heavyweight from Montreal and Los Angeles and BX Crew from Toronto transform a 40 ft blank white wall into a work of urban art.

Heavyweight

Heavyweight Art Installation is a Montreal-based collective consisting of painter Gene Starship, graphic designer Tyler Gibney and artist Dan Buller. In 1999, Heavyweight began production of a series of paintings on 6 x 6 ft, canvases at live club and music environments. Working simultaneously on a single canvas, the three artists derive inspiration from the music, people and atmosphere of each event. Occasionally, relevant historical or iconographic figures are incorporated into the compositions from the group’s file of collected photographic, illustrated, and graphic source materials – a visual equivalent of the music technique of "sampling". The end result is highly resolved compositions that blend each artist’s style and their intuitive influences of graffiti, graphic design, calligraphic line work and illustration.

Dance: Design

Curator: Stuart Li
Marilyn Brewer Community Space, All Weekend-long

Along with the rise of electronic music in popular culture was the evolution of the flyer as a means of informing, titillating and drawing the public to clubs and performances by DJs and MCs. This exhibit features the works of a number of Toronto Graphic Designers and reflects the growth of the digital process as the dominate means of creating graphics and typography.

Bent Design Inc.
design and printing

Bent design is perhaps most well known for their colourful and intricately folded flyer designs for the infamous RnB parties. Flyer design is pushed beyond the flat surface of the paper and turns them into design objects.

Born: 1975, Scarborough, Ontario Canada
Designing flyers since 1991

3:00am in the morning... you exit the party and your faced with a muster of street PR... as a designer, it is at this moment where you should make every inch of paper count.

It's important to express the vibe of the event through the imagery and typography used. The type of music being offered at a particular party will often inspire the materials chosen, as will as the desired atmosphere andcrowd. I feel the party/club flyer should be treated as a preview to the event as well as providing the necessary info.

Serigraphie Populaire
info@seripop.com

Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau started Seripop, in Montreal in 2000. The two art-school dropouts wanted to use screenprinting as a way of painting in bulk, creating mass-produced yet handmade prints, posters, and flyers for their own band and their friends’ bands. They've have a long history of interest in underground music and art, and between them, they have at times been involved in painting, installation, performance art, video, spoken word, and mail art. They abstract classic design styles, build on them, and form parallels to objects in the world outside of poster art such as underground comics, amateur graffiti, garbage, and ceramic animals. Their illustrations have appeared in Tokion, Punk Planet, Strut magazine, Select magazine, Flyer magazine, and Skyscraper.

SCOTT C
[email]fathead@videotron.ca

With his DJing roots firmly planted in early nineties hip-hop, Toronto native Scott C’s love of beats and rhymes lead to musical awakenings in jazz, funk, fusion, soul and the Brazilian spectrum. The need to bring underground, burgeoning and forgotten music to the forefront has always been popular, but remains marginal, and Scott's modest designs have been able to reflect that, most notably with Montreal's musically diverse monthly party, The Goods. Scott has been a music journalist for the past 8 years and is currently a columnist for the Montreal Mirror. He's still not sure how Photoshop works exactly, but continues to design flyers anyway.

NOBODY KNOWS MY NAME
July 10th, 5 pm
The Studio Theatre

As pervasive as American hi-hop culture has become over the last few years, it reamins a mainly male-dominated field. Despite the occasional breakthrough (Lauryn Hill, Salt N Pepa, and Lil Kim), strong female artists have largely been shut out of the system. With NOBODY KNOWS MY NAME director Rachel Raimist shines some long overdue light on six women who tie their lives and identities to the hip-hop world. Performers like Medussa, T-Love, Asia One and DJ Symphony speak frankly about their experiences and display a resolute dedication to their respective art forms. NOBODY KNOWS MY NAME give unimpeachable testimony to their skills as Mcs, Djs, producers and breakdancers. Raimist, who has directed video projects for Redman, Lauren Hill, Wu-tang Caln and others, makes this an insightful document of perseverence and enpowerment. Featuring Medusa, T-Love, Lisa, Leschea, Asia One, DJ Symphony.
