Soz wade - none of the above.....
Its to counter the extra fatigue that the aircraft experience due to continually being in motion (ie going up and down) on the carrier. The movement causes the wings to flex and suffer from fatigue, which land based harriers dont suffer from (to the same extent), thus they need the extra material, and thus the extra weight!

Isnt it great to know that after 3.5 years of studying aerospace engineering i know this sort of !! Its just got to increase your confidence in flying doesnt it?? :D:D:D
Would you like me to start telling you some of the dodgy we get up to in aircraft now??? :p:p:p |

Yeah theres a MiG that flies out of Bankstown airport (ive seen it!) and does tourist flights.... cant remember what type of MiG it was though! :)
I think i should wait till after you get back from Europe before i say much more Wade, you might not get on to the plane to Europe if i do!! ;)
