Best time to add effects ?

What's the best time to add effects ? And in any particular order ?

It makes sense to me that reverb comes last, but what about any others ?

EG. If I have a synth that has chorus and reverb, should I use these effects and then record these to audio ? Or should I record my synth dry and then add effects later ?

I have a slight feeling this has been discussed here before. There shouldn't be any particular "you must have it this way"-order really, but people say you should use a compressor as the first effect, and the equalizer should come last. In between you can then try out different spots for the rest of the effects, compare how they behave in different order etc. etc.

When I use hardware in my tunes, I tend to use its own reverb, chorus and delay rather than using software effects on a dry export of the hardware sound. Compression and EQ as software effects, reverb, chorus and delay as hardware effects. That's at least my personal way (which works okay with my particular type of hardware, that is).

You usually want to throw the EQ in last, although usually I have another EQ before other effects get applied. I don't know what else... Sorry. =\ But yeah, there should usually be an EQ after the reverb when you're putting in FX.

It can sometimes be good to record without effects, or at least withhold the recording to audio later on and keep it in midi. Especially with leads using reverb and delay, it can be a good idea to put the reverb and delay on towards the end so that you can get the right amount of reverb and delay to fill it out without making it go all muddy. This is obviously a lot easier with VSTi stuff than it is with hardware when you need to record to audio so that you can use the synth for another sound.
