Package deals are a total waste. This is what you should get:
If strapped for $$$ at least find one used sl-1200. They can range from $200+ used.
A brand new sl-1200m3d, 1200mk5, 1200mk2 usually runs around $400-$450 ea.
BTW they will last a lifetime. I know people that are using decks almost as old as i am without problems.
As for mixer, that depends on what you wanna spin. The mixer that i use is the Rane Empath, very high end and expensive ($1000usd)
For someone starting out i personally won't recomend spending too much. The Tascam xs-8 is a great buy if you can find one. It's recently discontinued and selling for $150. Origional price is ~$500. Vestax pcv-180, Ecler smac-30pro, vestax pmc-270 are also great mixers that you should check otu too.
Anyways if i sound like im babbling, it's 2am and im ing tired! lol. damn laundry! |

| oh yeah. This is a really expensive hobby. Gear may seem insanely expensive, but it's dirt cheap compared to a crate of vinyl. The thing about buying cheap stuff... It's not worth anything if you want to resale it and you will be more or less disapointed w/ it as well. Once you get into it, it becomes insanely addictive. |

I'm in a similar position, and as I'm just starting I would like to get a package as it at least starts you off with everything you need.
One good package I have found is the Numark Phat Pack, comes with direct drive TTs, mixer, headdies, and active speakers. The reason I look at this one is that I don't have enough room in my bedroom, so can't run it through my stereo, hence get the speakers.
Check it out at www.numark.com
Thats my recommendation and probably what I'm going to get in a couple of months, feel welcome to shout me down:whip: if you have better advice |

did you even bother to read my last 2 posts? Don't waste your money. Try and find a good used technics turntable and decent mixer and build it piece by piece. |

actually, the pack above is from 123 DJ (you can click the link), but they are not the best place.
go here instead: http://www.djmart.com
DJ tranz is a member on these forums, and will give you a deal. Here's one I priced out for you:
for some reason they don't carry vestax, but this numark is a nice mixer too.
Your on your own for speakers, i suggest just finding some old amp and speakers in the buy and sell, it will do. |

if you want a mixer that will last, don't get a numark one, the faders die after 4 months in my experience :) get a vestax pcv-whatever, the faders are fantastic and they take a load of hammer! not to mention sexual colours..
as for decks, going for the cheap option may be easier, but at the end of the day technics will not break, and second hand mk2's are nearly as good as brand new, whereas decks will get progressively ter.
although i think decks are better to learn on.. if you start on tech's, you get a bit complacent and when you come accross anything else you are ed, because you can't understand why it isn't holding its pitch, and have no experience in dealing with this ;)
the choice is yours |

Alrighty Chex, I deserved that, but you gotta remember we are talking budget here.
I live in Australia, so that package Briden priced out for me, you gotta divide the price by about 0.75 to work out cost, then there are import duties. One tax we have is that if you import something over $1000, you gotta pay 10-15% of the value in tax, in addition to normal customs. Then shipping, it keeps adding up................
Alright, Technics, heres my beef. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 1200s are very (insert expletive) expensive, then add mixer, headphones. Once again, it adds up. I have no qualms about the claim they are the best, if you have the money, go for it. I don't have the money.
I know i can save up more and buy Technics, but can I wait that long? probably not (I AM a uni student = poor)
As for finding used 1200s, thats hard as there are not many on australian ebay, not many DJ shops around here, and not many being advertised in the classifieds.
I stick to buying a package to start out, THEN upgrade to 1200s when you decide this is what you want to do and you start getting serious. Gradual upgrades in your gear, there are pros and cons to both
At the moment, I am looking to dj as a hobby not seriously, but if that comes along... happy days. It all depends on your level of involvement.
If you have suggestions for ON A BUDGET, please say so, we don't all have money for 1200s
(Probably everyone reading this thinks I'm an idiot, but so be it. I would really like to afford 1200s...........) |
