Hey TAs ~
I've been meaning to ask the entire forum this question: what is so unique about our music we love so much? What drives us to listen to more, and search for that hidden meaning? For the past several months, I've noticed friends, collegues, and non-listeners ask me 'how can you listen to that repetitive music' or 'that music is so obnoxious and annoying.' Even a few dates I've had are not quite sure how to put their thumb on why I go nuts for specific tunes. I'm looking for away to describe to them what EXACTLY is it that we love. And, I'm not looking for those cliche and over-used answers of "it's life" or "trance is an escape," but a different, more elite explanation to electronic music in general. I've been a percussionist for years now, and recently dropped that hobby and took up the Dj scene five years ago (and soon to Dj myself); but, I can get past that repatitiveness of the rhythm and actually hear the essential meaning of the music. How would YOU describe this "understanding?"

Being able to enjoy electronic music shows a very unique state of mind. When people give it different labels and call it repetitive or loud and meaningless I laugh in their face. These are the same people who can’t really get to ones level to understand anything. I guess we all have one common chemical in our heads that makes us different from them…or not. I would also look at the level of involvement, which is an essential factor in how one looks at music. If someone would let me hear some bangin’ techno 10-12 years ago…well, I don’t think I’d be too pleased to hear it. It took me years to develop taste for music and everything started from the moment I’ve given it a chance…
I loved it ever since… |

Ooh, good question!
My first reply would be that I love the hypnotic effect of trance, the mental pounding that you endure whilst listening (and preferably dancing) to some pretty whacked out music. The only problem is that this reply has little to do with the current generation of trance...
OUR trance, the trance of the present and recent past of the last 6 years, bears little resemblance to the trance I cut my teeth on. Sure, I do like it, enough that it got me into DJ'ing a few years ago, but 95% of all trance produced today is either cookie cutter crap, be it a supersaw lead track (the equivalent to yesteryear's TB-303 tweaky acid line) or some form of trancepop. OUR trance has taken one small twist of a few classic tracks and evolved the entire genre around the epic breakdown.
I'd very much love to see a return to the past, where sonic exploration is preferred over "where can I download some ReFills of 'trance sounds'". I'd love to see alot more good trance tunes at around 150 BPM or so (ie FAST). I'd love to see tracks that take you on a journey with some twists and turns over the predictable buildup to a breakdown to yet another breakdown. I'd love to hear an acid line build and build and build the energy up to the point where I think I'm going to have a nervous breakdown right there on the dance floor. I'd love to see some more producers step out of the shell and try some different (oh wait, my bad... Tiesto has been doing that, and he's getting ripped for it...)
OK, so that was a bit of a rant... the long and short is this tirade is that I miss that feeling of feeling NOTHING I used to get from trance, as opposed to the evocation of feelings that a good chunk of today's trance tunes are try to evoke in you.
That being said, I'm going to go listen to Love Comes Again over and over again... :D |

well first off, im going to make sure not to over romanticize 'OUR' music. sure, when we hear that perfect 'trance' chord progression with a sweet ass melody if sends shivers down many of our spines (like E does, or did in my case.... ;) )the music makes many of us feel good, or euphoric, whatever, we like it. now go down to your ty side of town and if you talked to a 'gangsta' im sure they would have many things to say about why they love rap, and why rap is so 'meaningful' and 'soulful' to them. while to many of us, it is just plain rythmatic gibberish. so why we like 'OUR' music? who knows, but the better question is why does ANYONE particularly like a CERTAIN style over another?
on a side note- i knew nothing of music before raving. i listened to a little of it all, mainly pop mainstream stuff, metalica, live, lincoln park, etc... all that stuff. then i started taking E at a few raves, mind you i stopped that long ago, and something changed in me, i think physiologically. its quite strange. its almost like the E changed something in my brain where now i can really 'hear' music, cause i KNOW i didnt before. i think much of the population doesnt truly hear music, be it their own style or ours. now, i can listen to any genre and i can conclude as to why it sounds good or bad sighting out specific reasons. my love for music has frown imensly since then. i enjoy a wider variety of music. my cd collection, which is 95% EDM, also consists of coldplay (of course), 2pac, outkast, classical (bach, mozart, etc...), enya, era, red hot chili peppers, sublime, marley, 311, all sorts of stuff.
any of you feel like there was a specefic time in your life you really started 'actively listening' to music? or did you do it from birth? i had friends that did it from birth and when i used to talk with them about music i was always way off target, now im leadin the pack! oh well, my rant for today, im off to class (FINALS NEXT WEEK WOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!) |

I'm gonna be minimalistic....be true to my music taste ;)
I think it all stands on one word - emotions ... knowing that, in a way, emotions are nothing but reactions... and knowing that we are all different (made by somewhat similar but still diferent expiriences with specific 'genetic' talents and interests) .... you can be nothing but sure that the way we are, we're simply driven by this type of action -> trance/techno/electronic music |
