My friend and I are throwing a bday party for a friend, and we figured we'd each do a set for her, as bday gift ... now I have some great studio reference monitors that I use for my bedroom, it's loud, adn clear, adn defintiely does the job ... now my friend has some home entertainment stand speakers that have there own amps... would ti be safe to plug up to those speakers and play them rather loud ??? And just u my reference monitors for dj'ing ?? any input would be great, thanks !

Well, give us the product name and number and the specs and the size of the room and where they will be set up and such...

use the monitors as booth speakers and have them as loud as you would usually have them and use some proper speakers as master outs imo

I’ve used my home entertainment speakers as the main speakers in two house parties and they were okay. Just test them before the party to see how loud you can go before they start to distort and make note of it. If you have a power subwoofer, it’ll help you to pump the volume up even more before the sound starts to get muddy ... that’s been my experience with home entertainment speakers.

It's generally a terrible idea unless you plan on not blasting it too loud.

This is consumer equipment; do not forget that. My advice turn your regular speakers up to the point where they're distorting and keep them below that, not just a tad but somewhat well below.

If you drive the speakers at max for an extended amount of time you could destroy them adding to that the fact you could potentially overheat and damage the amp.

Don't play it too loud unless it's meant to be.

yep all good points... i played at a few house parties and used my regular home speakers as well, in fact thats all i've been using for a good 3 years. I had 2 smaller studio monitors which i used in the booth with a seperate amp and then my mains on a seperate amp as well. even with that being said there was still a considerable amount of distortion at high levels.

it all depends on the quality of your speakers, some can take more abuse then others. even some of the higher end ones arent really designed to be pushed at high spl for extended periods of time. like jdat said try to find the distortion point. bass is usually the first thing to start distorting so if you have a powered sub then you can cut the bass level on your mains so you can drive them harder.

after a while i just got fed up trying to push my home speakers and didnt want to ruin them... so i picked up a pair of mackie srm450's as mains, kick ass speakers, incredibly loud and clear. although i still use the smaller studio monitors in the booth, since they are right in front of me they dont have to be blasting and can get the job done.

depending on what brand of speakers you are using, there shouldnt be a problem. however if ur house normally has small power surges id get a surge protector before i plugged it in

you should be ok, just dont push them too hard....

Even my mission speakers get a bit strined sometimes (house party last month on my rotel pre power amp...)
