A history prof of mine mentioned this, so I decided to do some more reading about the subject:

President Bush, appearing almost uncomfortable, read a statement that said that humanity was "bound by conscience to remember what happened" and that "the record has been kept and preserved." The record, Mr. Bush stated, was that one of the worst acts of genocide in human history "came not from crude and uneducated men, but from men who regarded themselves as cultured and well schooled, modern men, forward looking. Their crime showed the world that evil can slip in and blend in amid the most civilized surroundings. In the end only conscience can stop it."
But while President Bush publicly embraced the community of holocaust survivors in Washington last spring, he and his family have been keeping a secret from them for over 50 years about Prescott Bush, the president's grandfather. According to classified documents from Dutch intelligence and US government archives, President George W. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush made considerable profits off Auschwitz slave labor. In fact, President Bush himself is an heir to these profits from the holocaust which were placed in a blind trust in 1980 by his father, former president George Herbert Walker Bush.
Throughout the Bush family's decades of public life, the American press has gone out of its way to overlook one historical fact – that through Union Banking Corporation (UBC), Prescott Bush, and his father-in-law, George Herbert Walker, along with German industrialist Fritz Thyssen, financed Adolf Hitler before and during World War II. It was first reported in 1994 by John Loftus and Mark Aarons in The Secret War Against the Jews: How Western Espionage Betrayed the Jewish People.

And I'm sure some of your relatives distant as they may be also did some hanous things, which may have benefited their survival, which may have helped you somewhere along the line...(like being born). I'm sure it's in my family history as well.
If you are going to hold a person that wasn't born accountable for the actions of their ancestors, then we should all be damned to the gates of hell for the actions of those we are related to.
This story is moot in my opinion...and just more propaganda for some people to follow because they don't have anything better to do.
...and I do condemn the great grandfather...I certainly don't agree with his actions or profits...but I don't blame his childrens child's child for this. |

I have several friends who's grandfathers could have very likely been the executionares of my grandfathers' families.:(
I can forgive them for being their grandchildren, I can't forgive there grandfathers however. |

While I am far from a Bush supporter I have to agree that this is not a big deal in any fashion other than as propaganda. Just as the Kerry is a war criminal stuff is propaganda.
Bush has done enough things in his own life that he is, in my opinion, not fit to be president. And over all I thought his father was an upstanding individual. If this was such an issue then it would have been more important to the former president's campaign than the current one's.
When you go looking for "bad press" you are going to find propaganda, sometimes mostly or wholly unfounded. It really saddens me to think that we are so bombarded by propaganda now that no one really cares to look for the pertinent and factual information.
Yoepus's take on it is fair IMHO, and he is affected by it more than I am.
