Passive Subwoofer Set-up Question

I am setting up my basement and its been a while since I set up a passive sub.
I know there are a couple of ways to do it.
Until I get my new receiver, I only have l/r out from my current receiver to work with. Isnt there a way to piggy back the speaker wires to hook up the sub?
I tried going out from the receiver into the sub, then out from the sub into the left speaker. It sounds like shiznit.
My sub only has l/r inputs on it.
Will a better receiver have a better way to hook up a sub?
If I have a 2 channel Denon reciever, how would I hook up a passive sub? What about a powered sub? I know on digital receivers there is a sub out....is there a sub out on 2 channel receivers? |

I am not an expert but let my make some suggestions until someone with more experience responds.
It sounds to me like you are currently wiring the sub just like an active sub but without a dedicated sub out. The problem with this is that the main speakers are hooked up after the sub, so the sub uses a bunch of the power to fire and then there is hardly any left for the mains. I think this is true. For a passive sub you are going to want to have a seperate dedicated amp.
When my dad upgraded his stereo with Ascend mains and a Hsu powered sub, we piggy backed it like that because he was still using his old amp that lacked a sub out. It sounded better than his original system, but you could hardly tell the sub was even working. Then he got a new amp with a sub out and it was totally different. Just something the think about, but if you are stuck with an old reciever then I don't know.

Risht now I am using a bookshelf system that only has l/r out.
I am planning on getting some sort of an amp/receiver to power everything. i have a pair of jbl 2 way speakers as well. they are rated at 100w.
i was going to buy a denon 2 channel receiver o power everything. the sub is about 7 years old, but was only used for a year before it was shelfed.
meaning it sounds like the speakers are muddied.
the sub only has a l/r input on it.
if i get a receiver with a/b can i use the b outputs to power the sub?
can i buy a 2 channel amp instead of a receiver? would i still need a seperate amp to power the sub?
if i got a powered sub, is there someway to hook it up to a receiver/amp?
i am trying to spend as little as possible here. i bought the 2 ways thinking i could hook this sub up to make up for some of the bass and remove some distortion from the mains that the bass sometimes couses.
BTW: i have an hsu vtf-2 and that thing ROCKS. the depth charge scene in u571 had my neighbors running for cover. |

simply put:
to run a passive sub, you need:
a) an amplifier
b) an "active" (line level, not speaker level) crossover, between the signal source (reciever, mixer, etc) and the above mentioned amp.
connect the crossover to one of the recievers outputs. almost any good reciever has more than one line-level output that always follows the current signal selection. look for a tape or minidisc recording output.
the crossover should be used to filter out all frequencies above about 120hz, depending on your sub's frequency range.
otherwise, the amp will amplify all the sound and send it to the sub. the sub wont respond to most of the frequency range, and thus you waste alot of power.
as far as a powered sub.. just hook it up to an output of the reciever, plug it in. most powered subs have built in crossovers. |
