I find also that different universities have their strengths in different areas.
Take engineering for example (talking about what i know). This ranking places Melbourne University above Monash, which as a whole may well be the case, but in in terms of engineering, Monash offers a much stronger course, which translates to a more respected degree in the industry.
However in the field of applied science (a friend of mine's course), a Melbourne University degree carries greater signifigance. And reputation must also be taken into account, the history and pride of the institution influence the degrees, so whereas a science degree from Monash may be of similar standard to one from Melbourne (as the Dean of Science believes), a degree from Melbourne holds greater respect in industry simply because its from Melbourne University. And respect in the industry is what its all about, after all a degree is a means to a professional position in industry.

| over here, for engineering, it doesn't matter nearly as much which university you come from out of. Our engineers are a 'closed profession' like doctors and lawyers, and are comletely self regulating. As a result, any university offering engineering courses must be accreditted by the Ontario Engineering Society and their courses must offer the challenge and difficulty level stated by the society. As a result, the engineering programs are almost uniformly difficult, with exceptions to certain schools that deem it necessary to punish their students further in the name of 'reputation' [my school included]. Stupid me, taking the hardest fricken eng program in one of the hardest frickin schools on the fricken continent, when no matter where I go, I still get ripped off with a $60,000 piece of worthless iron jewelry at the end. |

Well I'm from Canberra, and I can honestly say it doesn't have much (I wish we had a beach). Sure there's plenty of weed, but it doesn't equal out. There are only a few good clubs: Insomnia, they play good electronic, mostly techno, the trance is mostly exciting sort (I'm nu to trance =]).
Mooseheads, good club.
Academy club, also Minque, and Shooters (2 dollar drinks!), Cube if you bowl for the other team, and lot33. Most of them are in the city and about 30 seconds to 5 mins walk from each other. |
