g'day!
been looking for a new land to call my own even if for a bit. Considering doing my teacher's college training in your beautiful country ( Uk is the second choice )
Right now the choice is tween Melbourne and Sydney, leaning towards Melbourne as it sounds more diverse than Sydney altho I will miss the beautiful beaches that don't seem to be nearly as accessible as they would in Sydney.
One of the other universities is University of Monash that is 45 mins to 60 mins away from Melbourne. Can anyone give me first-hand knowledge on the two universities- University of Melbourne and University of Monash.
Finally- yeah i do need somewhere to stay :D so if any of your homes are available, let me know.....

last but not least of utmost importance- How is the electronica scene down under. in TO we can be guaranteed at least one big-enough name DJ at least every other week....

I can't imagine not dancing for a whole year.

Voodoochild.

Perhaps I can shed some light on your questions about Melbourne :)

- Divesity: If it's diversity you want, there are no better places in the world than Melbourne & Sydney. Distinguishing between the two, in terms of levels of diversity, is difficult.

- Universities: Melbourne and Monash universities are generally seen as the two premier universities in Melbourne (by employers anyway). Melbourne's campus is literally walking distance from the CBD, while Monash has its main campuses in Caulfield (about 10 min drive from the CBD) and Clayton (about half an hour from the CBD) Deakin, RMIT, and LaTrobe universities are also worthy of a mention. I'm not sure how it works over your way but to get your teaching certificate you need to have completed your bachelor degree (of 3 or so years, in whatever area) and then complete a further year to gain your Diploma of Education (there are also bachelor degrees in teaching if you havent already received prior qualifications). This would generally get you a job as a teacher with no dramas. We have a big problem with teacher shortages, especially male teachers.

- Beaches: Whoever tells you that Melbourne has no access to beaches is a fool. Sure, in winter the beaches are a no-go zone, but in summer... it's like being a kid in a candy store. StKilda beach on the inner eastern side of the city is the most popular, with Williamstown beach being the most popular for the inner west. If you're up for a slight travel you can travel down the surfcoast (only an hour from Melbourne, near Geelong) and you have the best surf beaches in the world, along with the world famous Bells Beach.

- Electronica: Being a final year student I've recently been far too busy to be hitting the clubs in the past year. As far as the whole scene goes, it's getting better. We dont have big name gigs EVERY week, but they're starting to come around bit more often. Plus, the popularity of our music is slowly gaining speed, so this can never be bad.

-Weather: Winter is fully house. Enough said. Summer, on the other hand is insane! 40 degree days occur, on avg, about 2-3 times a year, with most of summer sitting in the high 20's and low 30's. Fantastic. The sun isnt as piercing as it is in the northern states either.

- Transportation & Infrastructure: One last, and important point. For those assesing in which part of melbourne to live, I'd suggest the western suburbs. Not only is the standard of living cheaper (only $5 for large pizzas!!) the road system is farrr better than in the east. The western suburbs being only relatively new, compared to the east, there's been ample opportunity to create sufficient highway infrastructure. So basically, I live 35km away from the city, and it takes me 20 minutes to get to the CBD (with the highway taking me directly into the CBD). If i were to live 35km away from the CBD in the eastern suburbs it would take me anywhere from 30min to an hour to get to the CBD.

It is a good city, the most livable in the world apparently :D

hello

I would like to ask you guys about University of Wollongong. Is it a good uni? how about the city, is it nice?

any feedback would be appreciated :)
A.J.
It was awarded the Australian University of The Year for the last three years :p :p It is a good university.

Wollongong is a city about 1 hours drive south of Sydney. It has lots of nice beaches, some nice pubs and i think one or two nightclubs. If you are really into the nightlife, then staying in Sydney would be a much better option. Wollongong is much smaller than Sydney....Wollongong still has parties at the university every week though i think. It is nice, but if you are a real TA there isn't really much going on down there. I don't know of any trance events running in Wollongong.

Sydney is where all the action is! Go to the University Of Sydney, right in the middle of the city!
