Of course JVM sucked @ Lotus. in' Diggers wasn't that good @ Lotus. Who designs a club with the fookin' dj booth right beside the front door, w/ the only way further into the club taking (a continuous stream of) people right in front of the booth? Hahhahahaha! At least when the air conditioning broke, this wasn't so much of a problem!

He headlined Revival a while back, and absolutely destroyed the place. However, JVM is indeed not for everyone. I absolutely love his opening sets, but, that is because I have an appreciation for things like how tight his mixing is (much improved from the days before he founded Balance w/ Fortier, wherein he was know as Jimmy Van Melatonnin, and couldn't mix to save his life).

As he obviously doesn't play hard for opening slots, and because he predominantly does opening slots, many people write him off because anything that's not hard and bangin' and entry-level really just doesn't do it for them. Jimmy headlining @ Guv may be a far better representation of his capabilities.

lol well i've seen him in the UK as well and i know many of his sets. his style and song selection puts me to sleep, but thats just personal. (especially since i despise progressive music--sounds like the sci-fi channel if you ask me)
systems dj booth is just as close to the front door as lotus's was. the problem with their sound system was actually their very high ceiling in the main room. before they went under, eddy k and YYZ Entertainment was going to move the main room upstairs. the downtstairs setup was just temporary.
and you know what? myself and my friends have felt more welcome at lotus than at guv or system and believe me we don't look like your typical blond barbie. you must have gone on a night other than business fridays because the crowd that i knew wasn't that bad at all.

This will be great. Everytime I've seen Jimmy live I've been blown away. He's so smooth - mixing, programming, tunes.

I agree Matt...I was at this Revival show and he did destroy. I was really impressed. I have heard the same critism about his downtempo sets putting people to sleep but I believe one doesn't have to be hit over the head in order to appreciate a good set. And yes, most people have only experienced his opening sets which like any respecting DJ who is opening for a prog night...he keeps things slightly downtempo so that the headliner comes out on top and looks like the superstar ... to make sure that they hire your ass again. Jimmy didn't step on any toes on his way up the ladder and served up some beautiful opening sets...sure maybe slightly downtempo compared to those he opened for...but beautiful sets none the less. True prog fans who have seen him outside of his opening act gigs will say nothing but great things. Unfortunately too many times prog DJs who are just starting out get a reputation for being really skilled, which is great, but also rumours often circulate that they pump out sets that are too mellow for a big crowd...that is because those people have never seen them at peak time or when they have been offered the headliner spot. Things change then my friends!!! JVM's Prog is an acquired taste and one I enjoy immensely!I would say though that if you aren't a real lover of the prog that it might not be the show for you.

Now...what to do on the 28th...what to do...dirty house or elegant prog. what's a girl to do?
