aye, one other thing id like to say though which is tied into the practice theory, is im not sure the other genre's with their scratching and stuff can be sure they have the best dj's, coz with trance you dont need to do the tricks so you would never practice or learn them, you practice getting the pitch so accurate you can do long mixes etc. id like to see a hip hop dj pull off a minute long mix before people can go around saying one dj from a genre is better than another tbh...

fair point, but if you take techno as another example, liebing in particular pulls off 5 minute mixes (or just bootlegs) involving 3+ tunes, cutting, scratching, using effects etc.. that takes raw talent. you can't have one without the other, im sure liebing couldnt do that without the years of practice..

take this as an analogy:

say you are an olympic athelete, obviously you need to train very hard to get to that level of gandalfness, but other people who train just as hard dont come close to how good you are, as they dont have that little something deep down that makes them that good.

Not really, I don’t believe in innate “talent” one bit. Yes, on a very basic level there will be some people with biological differences which will make them slightly better at some things than others, however the real deciding factor in these things is you socialisation throughout you life, which can be re-programmed as it were.

i agree...

...but its not an entirly fair comparison in the sense that people with a natural tallent have the motivation to practice. For example you cannot say if you practise and practise you cannot be as good as the top dj's, beacuse someone without some sort of natural talent will not progress fast enough, and hence loose the motivation to practise.

Therefore it may be possible to be a top dj simply through practice, but i doubt anyone with no natural talent has devoted so much time and energy becuase they would simply become disheartened and ultimatley to be a good dj you have to be interested, people without the tallent are unlikely to be.

So i guess i'm saying yes and no.
