Hello. I'm an American and love movies. Bergman is one of my favorite directors. I'm a little curious about Bergman and how loved he is in Sweden. I like to compare it to Woody Allen in America. Allen isn't as loved in America as he is everywhere else in the world, so it's interesting for me to see how Bergman's country thinks of him.
-Would regular everyday Swedish movie fans today know and speak to Bergman's better films? (Hardly any Americans know Allen's work)
-If I asked you to list your 3 FAVORITE Bergman films, what would they be? (Mine, alphbetically: Face to Face, Scenes from a Marriage, and Wild Strawberries)
-If I asked you to list the 3 BEST Bergman films, what would they be? (Mine, alphabetically: Cries & Whispers, Persona, and The Seventh Seal)
-If you have seen Woody Allen's "Interiors," do you think Allen payed proper homage to Bergman?
and finally,
-How was his last film, Saraband, received by Sweden?
I really really would appreciate your opinions. Thank you very much in advance. :D |

i believe Ingmar Bergman is loved by the swedish movie critics. But if you ask any swedish kid on the street who he is not many would recognice him and definetly not recall any of his movies.
The younger generation see him as a man from the past.
But the older generation really look up to him and appriciate his movies. |

Hi! yes I agree with Rebel9. I moved to Sweden (from America) when I was a kid and now I am about 10 years older than most the guys on TA. Even the people my age think of Bergman as the guy who made that movie in black and white where someone was playing chess on the beach with the Reaper. I come from Swedish imigrant family in USA so i had actually seen som Bergman and other movies in USA, but was too young to understand what made them special. If you want my honest opinion, Bergman has lifted a part of the Swedish culture to exaggeration by focusing on things that do not belong to all of us though they may prepresent some of the unique fascents of the Swedish culture. But we are all proud of our on-going list of Swedish artists not the least within pop music industry, medicine and technology as our nation is very small, smaller than most large world cities.
In summary, I think there are 3 reasons we do not know and love his work, 1) the profit in his own country syndrome, 2) we are too close to his 'truths' to appreciate them. 3) Maybe people who like Trance are not the same people who are into movie culture... just a thought. Maybe you as an American can tell us what you guys think is cool about his work? |
