I think it is perhaps one of the most insensitive and insulting diplomatic gestures I have come across recently. How Sweden would invite the Israeli repersentative to such a display is beyond my grasp of any diplomatic understanding.
They might as well of invited him to an art display depicting Sharon as hitler. For godsake, even enemies do not do such things to one another. Perhaps they should have called the Palestinian repersenative over for their art display depicitng the heroic Christian phangilists leaders triumphing over a burning model depciting Sabra and Shatila while they were at it.
I think the question the Swedisn Foriegn Ministry should be asking, is who sent this insult to the Israeli Ambassador.
Although I don't believe the Israeli Ambassador's reaction was the smartest, his actions returned in kind the insult to the Swedish people that the Sweds had given to him.
In otherwords, when he handed the Sweds a glove and they slapped him with it, he didn't just go away and file a complaint the next day, he took back the glove and slapped them back.
You Europeans should learn some manners, and respect your guest, not insult them!:whip: |

hehehe must be so hard for him to see something that oppose israeli opinion.... so he (the ambassador, chosen to represent his people) couldn't take to see this, so he destroy it, that shows pretty much imo ;)
donno about the rest of the world, but in sweden we have something called FREE SPEECH, he should know about that...
and yes, he was a guest at a anti-genocide conference, where they were suppose to discuss about this kind of issues, and this art was one way of explaining the issue from a palistinian way of seeing it... |

In a statement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said the Swedish government had promised not to link the anti-genocide conference with the Middle East conflict.
"The exhibit that glorified the actions of a suicide bomber who murdered 22 people is a violation of that understanding, and if it is not removed, Israel will reconsider its participation in the conference," the ministry said. |
If I was in charge of the Israeli Foreign Ministry I would demand a removal of this exhibit, as they have, and an apology from the Swedish government.
What is most horrendous about this incident is Sweden's reaction, not realizing the wrong they have commited and hiding behind a "free speech and free artistic opinion" label. You can also call the Israeli Diplomati a ing jewish piece a who be pushed into the sea and die - this is free speech. Such things are still an insult however, and are not even tolerated on places as open as this forum.
The Israelis should not have to ask for the Swedish to apologize, they should understand what they have done and offer such an apology themselves to amend the effects of their insult. |

Guess they should have kept that statue of Stalin and Saddam up than huh?
There are limits to everything. I am a great supporter of art and a great supporter of free speech. But the fact that I allow people to say things and do things, does not mean this should be a part of diplomacy. In diplomacy you CAN not say anything you wish or show anything you want unless you are willing to accept the consequences of such actions.
There are dozens of incidents of art that even you would not accept. Would you not protest if in Austin the Martin Luther King statue they have at the campus in the University depicted him bowing down on his knees to Mr. Crow? |

I believe he took exception to the fact that the face of a young woman who took the lives of 19 Israelis was being depicted in some symbolic gesture to exhalt a larger meaning in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You cannot sit there and tell me that any Palestinian would not have done the same if Israelis were being depicted as some artist's metaphor for something perceived as "Israel's struggle against the Palestians". I am someone who appreciates art and its expression in all forms, leave no doubts however that there is a time and place for everything. Maybe the Israeli minister should have just left and let his displeasure be known in a formal manner instead of resorting to such actions, but I am not Israeli and therefore my reaction would be more tepid as opposed to his. |

making such a gest only shows how stupid and ignorant he is... if you don't like it, slam the door and tell your jewish friends in the media to bring down sweden... maybe even start a search for wdm.

I'm not saying that palstinians would have done less, i'm just saying that this guy is an idiot. If he think that this art was extremely wrong, he should have complained in some other way than just destroying it, it wasn't _that_ offending... this makes israelis reputation much better, they seem so willing to negotiate and not use force  |

saw later that the swedish government had promised not to link the conferance with the middle east conflict, so i can agree in a way that it was wrong... but the whole theme of this exhibition was to question things like: "is it really that wrong of the palistinans to kill isralis when they kill palestinians" etc.

the swedish government did pay and order this exhibition, but they did not (to my understanding) say what should be there, so the government had nothing to do with it, so i think it should be under the rights of free speech for the artist to do whatever he wanted.
besides, it shouldn't be like first time sweden's government criticizes israel. it has happened before and i think they are ready to take the consequences on this - in a normal way, not in a "non peaceful" way... |
