Web Broadcasting

Dj Ricky H
Some recent issues have risen about our internet broadcasting that is making me wonder if I should put more time in effort in trying to bring more Trance into our community....as some have know, I am trying to start a non-profit internet radio show. I have been told that there are many legalities with this.... I wouldn't mind paying copyright fees if they are reasonable...I just need some help with this as I do not want to get in trouble or be sued by the Canadian form of the R.I.A.A.
My searches have left me with www.socan.ca .....but not sure where web broadcasting falls into......anyhelp wold be appreciated....
Also say if I am broadcasting in Canada....but ther server is in the U.S.A. then what?

Thanks in advance!!!

I believe you are required to pay a fee per song at this point. I remember awhile back the RIAA lamented and was discussing with the copyright corp about allowing small profit and non profit webcasts to pay no fee or a small set fee of some sort. That change was targeted to open up the small guys, while continuing to tax the big guys like RealPlayer, Windows Media, etc., all the huge corporate streamers.

I wrote a tiny article on it on my website when the RIAA released the news a few months back, its in my archives somewhere...

By the way, is your show just Tuesdays? Or is it 24/7? Do you take guests? etc.

Perhaps you could check out and maybe do a spot on cyberia radio for them, that'd be rad.

Cyberia Radio

so how do trance airwaves and basic beats do it?

try contacting TWA guys
they may not be of much help seing how they broadcast out of UK and may be under a different jurisdiction with a different set of laws, but it's worth a shot.
email Kuffdam (i forget his real name :D ) kuffdam@tranceairwaves.com
tell him apri told you about him. kuffy managest the playlist on TWA and a resident DJ there, i'm sure he'd have some info for you

good luck

Cool thanks!!!...I had got in touch with someone here in Canada...and as of now there is no Internet Broadcasting copyrights in canada....as the matter is still going through our court systems ...and what I have found is that non-profit radio stations only have to pay 1.9% of their operating costs (which to me is really reasonable and worth it to do it legit...) The only problem is that I can only find decent servers in the States....even thought the main stream is from Canada, but it is being broadcasted through the states and then that becomes a problem with the RIAA now...so I am still researching.
What also really sucks is that I can get around all this if there was an Canadian provider that can do this....and so far I have found none that can.....(I think most are waiting for the court ruling on the matter....) But if anyone knows a good provider in canada please tell me!!!..:D :D

by a stream provider, do you basically mean a box on a good line that can support high traffic?
