The future of Britain's biggest free outdoor live music event, with 100 of the World's top DJs on standby to descend on Newcastle, hangs in the balance because Newcastle City Council has not yet been able to satisfy conditions required by the City's Police. Radio 1 Controller Andy Parfitt has written to the Leader of Newcastle City Council, Tony Flynn demanding he urgently resolve the outstanding issues by 6.00pm tomorrow (Saturday 14 July), or Radio 1 will be unable to stage Love Parade, due to take place next weekend (Saturday 21 July).
Radio 1 has met or exceeded all the requirements placed on it to deliver a safe and successful event, but the local police have pointed towards the Council's failure to bring forward satisfactory traffic management plans for the weekend. An effective Park and Ride scheme is one of the last pieces of the jigsaw crucial to the staging of the event next weekend. Without this, Love Parade cannot go ahead.
Many people across the North East, throughout the dance music community and at Radio 1 have worked hard to make this event a success, and will feel deeply disappointed if the Love Parade does not take place. Additionally, thousands of fans have booked travel and accommodation for the weekend. There is no doubt that staging an event of this magnitude would have been a massive boost to the region's economy, and its cancellation threatens the future of some businesses in the local area.
"The council leadership have shown massive support for Radio 1 and the Love Parade over many months. We have been embraced warmly by so many people in the region, but they now need to bang a few heads together and get this issue sorted out, or thousands of music fans are going to be disappointed," said Controller Andy Parfitt. |

Unfortunatly it seem's as thou the Newcastle Love Parade 2001 event wont go ahead as explained in the post above.
We shall find out tomorrow night at 6pm GMT.
Judge Jules will be annouceing the decision live on his show tomorrow night.
It is a sad fact that the police in this country lay down so many laws in the name of "safty".
Obvisly safety has to be an issue but this is nothing to do with that,
it's about traffic flow and the fact that the police dont have the manpower available to police the estimated amount of traffic due into newcastle.
I know Newcastle quite well and there are more than enough area's surronding newcastle to set up temporary car parks and a bus service from those car parks to the town centre.
Making no need for any traffic to enter Newcastle itself.
Lets hope Newcastle council utilise the space around the town for such purpose.
It will be a shame to see this event cancelled :(
