Just wondering if there are any cheap places in Vancouver? Especially around 840 Cambie St.? Are there safe and unsafe areas? Because I wouldn’t want to live somewhere where it is unsafe.
What about public transportation and stuff like that? How often do busses travel on their designated routes?
I hear it's a very expensive city. If that's the case, how much money will food + apartment + phone + cable + internet cost per month?
Any sites with info on housing would be greatly appreciated. I've checked out UBC housing and it looks like these guys ask for $400-500 / month.
Also what are some good hotels to stay at for my first week? I’ll probably will stay at a hotel before moving into a permanent residence. I need something economic and not really fancy or expensive.
Thank you in advance :) |

Wow, that's a lot of questions, I'll try to answer what I can...
The cheapest places to rent will be in East Van. Most things there are reasonably good. The most unsafe area to live in is the downtown eastside, lots of crazy people and drug addicts there. Any other parts of the city, as far as I can tell, are pretty safe. It's an expensive city, sure, but there are lots of places you can rent for reasonably cheap. A lot of parts of the city have full ADSL service and cable internet which I think are about $30 or $40 a month. You can probably look at classifieds for housing on vancouversun.com or somewhere similar...dunno about any hotels, but again I'm sure you could find a deal somewhere.
Transit in this city is alright. The buses and monorail/train system are good when they show up...some bus routes, it seem, never have buses that show up when you need them to :whip: Also, transit here is never on time. But you can get pretty much anywhere you need to go, most people only need $63 a month for a bus pass. On most bus routes, the buses appear every 15-20 mins, other routes have them like ever 5 or 10 minutes. it's pretty varied. |

rent in vancouver is a tad pricey but if you're with a roommate, its not bad. food wise, there's super store which is the cheapest grocery store around, huge selection, a little bad on the customer service part :D. standard phone fee is $28. basic cable i think is around $15. as for internet, you can get dial up for $10, or cable or adsl for the standard $30-40. transportation is ok, compared to montreal its out here, dont know how it is compared to TO. if you're a UBC or SFU student, you get a U-Pass so you pay around $20-30 a month and can travel anywhere in the vancouver area.
i can tell you one thing, vancouver may seem expensive, but its hella cheap compared to some other places in the world, we have it real good out here :) |

| I don't find the transit system that bad here compared to Montreal.. yes we have the metro which links pretty much all of downtown and Montreal east, but it seems to me that it compares to the skytrain here.. and the bus system doesn't seems to be too bad either. But maybe that's just cause I live right next to a bus that brings me downtown in 20 minutes ;) |
