Why is Will Self famous?

Well?
its been annoying me, what has he actually done to deserve his celebrity?
I know he writes for GQ, & appears on some BBC documentary about grumpy old men, & he was on shooting stars.
But for instance Ulrika... at least she got famous by being a weather girl, so whats this Coke addict forty something Will Self done?

| He's written some good books and writes interesting social commentary in his columns. Sometimes political, but articulate and entertaining, I like him. |
