Sequencer (Cubase/Sonar) & Control Surface/Mixer - suggestions?

Hey all you Corstens, Buurens, van Dyks! Question: I have cubase sx. so far, I had been using only internal (software) controls. I would like to finally go to "hands-on" approach. I picked up Tascam 1884 but it isn't what I am looking for, as it is hardware recording interface and control surface. I want to stay with RME for recording, so tascam's recording feature is useless to me. Now, in terms of keeping it just as control surface - I think it's a bit over budget. I paid $1100 for it and i think I can get control surface cheaper.
That's not all. I am currently forced to use patch bay to split signal between RME for recording and Rack mixer for monitoring when not using PC. This setup sucks because rack mixer is . So, here's my dillema:
How do I control Cubase externally and combine mixing features? one of the suggestions i got was to use Yamaha 01v for control surface and continue to patch to it. There's also yamaha 01vx comming out that suposed to combine hd recording and control surface functions as well - but I don't want to switch to anything from RME. plus, yamaha will use mLAN - I hate mLan implementation.
Anywho, I don't want to get carried away here. Tell me what you use to control your DAW app. and how do you monitor passively?
BTW, I can use Sonar or Cubase - whichever works for me. |

Have you considered Steinberg's Houston control surface (Link) or the Mackie Control Surface (Link)?
The Houston is designed for Cubase specifically but the Mackie has a wider application use. I've read some good reviews for the Mackie. The Mackie allows for expansion. |

As far as control surfaces go for Cubase, I'd definitely have a look at the Mackie Control Universal. 100ml P&G faders.... mmmmm. Works for Cubase SX 1.03 and higher apparently. I was seriously considering getting one untill I realised I have SX 1.01. They're not that expensive either, considering the prices of some control surfaces, and as mentioned, its expandable.
I wouldn't even consider the Houston controller myself. There was a website up a while ago called houstoncontroller or something. I think Stienberg may have had it shut down by now, but it was this huge site made by someone who had experienced heaps of problems with the board. Unacurate and bad customer service for it.
Def have a look at the mackie control, its the same as the Logic control pretty much, only it doesn't work with Logic.
I got a little lost with some of your abreviations, but you mentioned the 01v, so I take it you are looking at getting a digital mixer as well. I'm not too sure how well the digital mixers are configured to software sequencers. I think there is a Digital Tascam that is made for DAWs. The 1884 or something. I forget. There's also the roland si-24 for a digital mixer. I'm pretty sure this is supported by Cubase. |

That's the Tascam I have now. It's supposed to emulate either Mackie Control or Baby HUI* (russian-speaking ppl, don't laugh)...
HUI* is a russian curse that literally means "Dick"... Every time I talk about mackie, I spell it out : H-U-I, otherwise I crack up... :)
Baby HUI sounds especially awesome, don't ya think? :D
anyway, thanks for the tips... I'll check them out. |

I would defenetly go for the mackie sionce it supports not only cubase but almost all good sequencers out there :)
and when it comes to quality (as far as I've heard) mackie does some really good on that front :) |
