Is the drive stuffed, or was it formatted?
if it was formatted/deleted We can help, if it's stuffed, it's stuffed(there is one method that MIGHT, but it's not for the feint hearted - put it in your freezer for 30 mins)
if it's formatted try not to write/use it. as the more u do, the more u write over.

As DJ Way said, define "stuffed". If it's software induced, there's a lot can be done to recover from just about anything short of a full format :) [and even then...]
If it's making-funny-noises stuffed, then ... well, there's ways and means. Freezing is the second step I'd go to, first being lightly (LIGHTLY damnit!) tapping it with a screwdriver. Freezing. Then moving on to opening it up and assisting it's start if it has a siezed bearing.
With any physical fault, have a new drive of same or larger capacity ready to dump any data on to, as it can be a very time sensitive thing to get data off intact.
If we're talking run-over-by-a-sheeps-foot-roller stuffed, then you need to go talk to hard drive rescue companies... and that sort of thing is expensive.
Good luck! |

not formatted or anything like that
ok so windows cant read anything off it because it says its corrupt
but it is able to recognize it when connected to the computer
no noises comin from it and it can stay powered.
i got the darn thing around 3 months ago so go figure
just used the r-studio demo and it is able to read all the files on it |

OLi_A: GREAT, we can get the data off it (as long as the drive doesn't totally crash and burn in the mean time).
As bragi said, do you have a replacment drive to copy the data to?
bragi: what software is easiest to get (and crack) in your mind. We have a registered app @ work, and that name has slipped my mind.

yeah i do
ok just wonderin...the computer im on now is an amd k6-2 so both drives (40 being this one and 60 being the other) are running at 32gb. thing is the data on my 60g hard drive exceeds the 32g restriction of the amd....will that cause a problem? |

What filesystem was on the disk?
32Gb restriction is dependant on the BIOS and the IDE chipset, not the processor.
As far as recovery software, that depends a lot on the answer to the first question.
If you can't answer the first question (ie, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS4/5, ext2/3, resierfs, ufs, etc, etc, etc), what version of what operating system were you running? |

Dude if ur sure the drives working, and it's a software problem then the best thing to do is copy the data to another drive and format it and start again.
First plug it into another computer with a working windows, and wildows will add your old drive as an extra drive in expolorer. Then copy all the stuff you want to recover onto you working drive.
Then goto command prompt and type 'format d:' where d is the drive u want to format. This will erase all the data from the disk. Then simply plug your formatted HDD into your original computer and reinstall windows... |
