High-tech targets bad bar customers,All patrons face personal history check at door

This unfortunately is old hat. I remember System used to do it a long time ago. They weren't taking pics, but collecting your personal info from our IDs as we entered. Studying their market, apparently..

I was pretty pissed that they swiped my card after i gave it to them, didn't even ask.. just took my card, pulled out the machine fom their back pocket, and swoosh, there goes all my personal data.

Incidently, System was one of the tier clubs back then as well.... going for a rich hard-drinking clientele, it's kinda funny how it's done a 180, and become more like Industry than any other club since Matt, Steve and the boys closed it down.

I smell a boycott of the clubs that do this.

the thing is tho, bar owners and operators will have access to your info. and what kind of information will they be storing? your address? just name? date of birth? in a few years they may start selling your info to advertisers, which is almost guaranteed to happen if the system catches on. the system may later require that you have BC ID or BC drivers license which will descriminate against those who dont have either one

i dont like this being implemented at all. being in the field that studies all this crap, you start thinking about a whole whack of scenarios, and orwell's 1964 is very much related to this technology

i actually see big clubs using this technology as they are the most likely to afford it and be interested in it to keep safety and attract more customers who fear for their safety and are ready to give up their identity, which is probably the majority.

my 2 cents

with the privacy laws that have been passed and come into effect early 2004, that would all be illegal, UNLESS you consent. All the marketing firms are screwed right now because they have these masses of info that they have to DESTROY, and then recollect. They are fighting to keep what theyve got, and asking if they can collect in the future, but from what Im told (my moms is fighting to keep the info) they are going to lose.
good for privacy, bad for buisness.

lol thanks for the correction :)

there's always the possibility that when you enter a club, your ID is taken and you are asked if you concent that your info be shared with a 3rd party. that will make it legal for you info to be collected and maybe a small percentage of people will say 'no' many people either would not care or would not realize the effects of this.

as long as advertisement and marketing exist, there will be a way to collect personal information on anyone and anywhere. all those sneaky marketers, they don't think like a regular joe, they are taught to think outside the box, i'm currently being taught that, not that i want to be in advertisement :p
