OTTAWA - Members of Parliament will vote Wednesday on a bill to extend hate speech legislation to protect gays and lesbians.
Supporters of Bill C-250 want to add sexual orientation to the list of groups protected under the Criminal Code.
The code already makes it illegal to incite hatred against an identifiable group based on colour, race, religion or ethnicity.
"The message that is sent out by the failure to include gay and lesbian people in hate propaganda legislation is that our lives aren't as valuable," said NDP MP Svend Robinson, author of the bill.
"If we're going to say no to the promotion of hatred and violence based on religion, colour, race and ethnic origin, surely we should say that gay bashing and promotion of hatred and violence against gay and lesbian people is just as unacceptable."
Opponents of the bill say the legislation would stifle free speech, particularly among religious groups.
Some worry that passages in the Bible condemning homosexuality could be declared hate literature.
"We've seen through the courts that when religious freedom comes up against gay rights, that in fact religious freedom intends to be more often than not the loser in those particular cases," said Derek Rogusky, of the group Focus on the Family.
Supporters of the bill say fears about censorship are groundless and that C-250 isn't meant to infringe on anyone's freedom of religion.
On Tuesday, a Canadian Alliance motion asking MPs to reaffirm the heterosexual definition of marriage was defeated by a vote of 137 to 132.

i dont remember the bible saying anything about condemning homosexuality. although i havnt touched that propaganda book since i was 12, someone want to post the passages?

Neither did I, but I guess the bible thumpers would know better than us right? Hehe they must have a good reason to be scared I suppose. |

I think it varies depending on the "version" of the bible you read. A lot of the new evangelicals use a newer bible than the King james version which is different (and they say more accurate) than the King James or the sandard catholic one. Their bible probably says it is wrong.
Can anyone say "revisionist history"?

though in judiasims defense (not that i am religious) "Abomination" (TO'EBAH) is a technical cultic term for what is ritually unclean, such as mixed cloth, pork, and intercourse with menstruating women. It's not about a moral or ethical issue.

| Well in all fairness to Canada, I seriously doubt that they would ever actually make the bible illegal, that would simply be ludicrous. However, I strongly disagree with their hate speech legislation. When the government begins to define what you can and cannot say you start traversing a slippery slope indeed. |
