Personally I think the iPod looks better better than the iRiver, but I think it's undisputed that the iRiver has better features.

If you're a cyclist I would have thought the 8hr battery life of the iPod would put you off, when you can get the 16 hrs of the iRiver. This is the killer for me. When the iPod does away with the spectacularly inferior 630mAh Li-ion I will consider the iPod again.

But definately wait for the word on the iRiver. iPod has the advantage in that it's a established. The iRiver may have glitches unknown at this time. I would definately also try very hard to get a hold of one or both types of players and test the quality of the sound for yourself, because cyclists need decent volume at least to overcome traffic and wind noise.

The more i look at the two the more i reckon i'd rather the 20g iriver. Problem is i live in ireland and its not available here yet? I'm suspicious about getting it online aswell. Can you recomend any good sites?

p.s. Your right about the noise of the traffic. Most mornings by the time i get to work i'm half deaf from having my earphones so loud :eyes:

I totally know what the morning deafness is like because I have a 1 hour bus ride with my headphones on.

Eventually as technology advances there will be 100% solid state mp3 players which will lead into the solid state hard drives :D The problem left to over come is the size requirements because architecture will only go so far for memory sticks. Then...you just have to make them bigger and bigger.

I have a Nomad Muvo. It's got 128 MB of space, so I can still hold 2 hours of msuic. And it was only 150 bucks. I love it.

I may have to do another one of these threads, only for the flash based players.

The reason I did this one is because I wanted something I could take with me on a long trip, where I would not have access to my computer for a few months, and for long cycling trips. A flash based player probably still wouldn't work on a long trip, unless you could store your collection online somewhere, then download from Internet cafes. But if you think about it, they could work for 8hr cycling rides. My thinking before was that most trance songs are about 10MBs at 192kps, so on a 128MB player I could only fit about 2hrs of music. But if you reduce their sample rate, as you have to anyway to save battery power on the HD based players, then you could fit 3-4hrs on a 128MB flash player. Now buy yourself a 512MB flash player and you've got at least 10, maybe up to 16hrs of music, on a thing the size of packet of gum, with no moving parts, that uses one standard buy anywhere AAA battery for up to 20 hrs.

Hmmm, sounds appealing...

I've had both a old 5gb scroll wheel iPod, and now own a second gen. 10 giger. I wouldnt reccomend anything but an iPod. I got my zen/nomad friends to convert, and they thank me all the time. Even got a friend of mine who had that archos media one that can play movies and stuff on it to convert to an ipod, he thanks me too ;) . For the simplicity and size you cant beat them. They go great in the car, or while running (assuming you have some type of protection for it, I have this rubber case for it, doesnt make it bulky, but has protected her on many occasions.) Or whatever you want to do with them, they are espically great when travelling, and 10 gigs of music satisfied a trip accross country for me and friend of mine, we never herd the same song twice (well we did, but thats cuz we wanted too). Go iPod, you wont regret it. Plus they look so damn sexy....
